Does anyone have experience with Clomid taken by their DH/SO?

Hi all! (I hope this is where I should be posting this. If not please accept my apologies a head of time!) A little bit about me: Me:29 DH:31 Ttc for over 3 years. We've just begun our fertility testing 2 months ago. It was suggested by my ob/gyn to start with my husband given the fact he had issues as a child (born unilateral crypt orchid which was repaired, also developed a hydrocele (sp?) as a teen which was also repaired.) We just returned from his urologist appt. After 2 SAs he definitely has a low count/mobility/motility and his sperm head and neck defects. At his last urology appt, they did blood work. Today he was told he has low testosterone and FSH values. Doctor prescribed 25mg of clomid once a day and recheck in 3 weeks. (We actually have multiple rechecks, the first being in 3 weeks). Does anyone have any experience with clomid used by a male partner? Did you think it's helped at all? Were there any side effects? My husband's a little apprehensive about taking meds at all, so any feedback would be wonderful!

  • We're his hormone levels checked as well? MH's doc seemed to be focusing on the low levels from the blood work results as opposed to the SA results. Sorry if I'm asking ignorant questions.....this is all a lot to take in.

  • My DH took Clomid.  All his details are in my siggy.  It did increase his testosterone but not a whole lot.  The only side effects we really noticed was more aggression.  It wasn't bad it was just noticable to me.  Since he has never had normal T levels, bringing it somewhat within normal range is a big change in hormones that he didn't know how to manage.  I hope it help your H.

You can recheck the T levels after 2-3 weeks but you will not see a change in an SA for 3 months.

This is pretty much exactly what I was going to say!

DH was on Clomid for several months and it helped increase his T, and therefore his total count. All the other parameters stayed the same though, so it's still IVF/ICSI for us. If it brings up the count enough to counteract the other parameters, then it might be helpful to somebody else though?

The only side effect that DH noticed was that he started getting heart palpitations.

  • Same as PP. My husband said he felt terrible on Clomid. He also was quick to anger and had headaches. It did increase his count , but nothing else. Also the count increase was by so little that it really didn't make IUI an option like we hoped.

  • Clomid helped my husband. He had a count if 50,000-70,000 and after taking clomid for 3 months his numbers were about 1 million and he has had analysis that have had around 2.8 million. Good luck to you!

I should add that at first he had some side effects too. Very quick to anger and headaches. And DH had normal T levels prior to taking clomid.

  • Hi everyone! I hope i'm not interfering with questions being answered...but I was wondering if men have to have low testosterone in order for clomid to work and be beneficial? My husband has really low count...under 5 million but normal T levels...wondering if there would even be a point to taking clomid. Does anyone know? Any input would be helpful! :)

My husband had normal T levels, and Clomid still helped him :)
