Breastfeeding

4 months old cries during feeding / refusing to nurse

Hi everyone. FTM here and have a question. DD has been a great nurser so far however recently (about a week) she started crying mid way through a feeding. I tried changing her position, burping, offering other breast and making sure I have milk in my breasts. Nothing helps. She cries with tears streaming down her face. She does exhibit signs of hunger though and if I offer a bottle she'll suck on it and it till full. Sometime keeping her upright for few minutes helps and she'll nurse some more after she calmed down.

I am at a loss at why she is refusing the breast all of a sudden , even though not entirely. My supply is already fairly low so I am worried about the supply dipping.

Any advice/suggestions / ideas as to what it is?

Thanks so much and sorry if this question has been asked before!

  • I just logged in to see if this problem was brought up at all. I'm having the exact same issue with my 4 month old. It's not at every feeding but probably 2-3 times a day and with increasing intensity over the last week. I'm also interested in ideas and advice!

Yeah I forgot to mention that its few times a day, not every feeding. Glad to hear I am not alone, hopefully we'll get some insight from experienced mommies :)
  • Am with you. I wrote about the same thing earlier. Looks like the fussiness may not be unusual.
  • I agree with PP... teething? A few of the moms in my BFing support group have described similar experiences when their LO is teething.

  • I was reading Diaper Free Baby today and the book suggests offering the potty to lo when they fuss while nursing. Might be worth looking into if you can't find any other solutions.

    From their website:
"Helps baby stay on the breast. Breast refusal is a common sign of
needing to eliminate but it is often confused with breastfeeding
problems such as overactive letdown, over-supply and low milk supply.

Think about how difficult it would be to eat and drink if you needed
to go to the bathroom: it is the same with your baby. If your baby
starts latching and un-latching, commonly referred to as, "popping on
and off" try offering the potty or toilet."

  • My LO is not yet 4 months, but we are already dealing with teething symptoms, including increased fussiness.  He did just this to me this past Saturday.  In fact, I started to stress that we were having issues related to inappropriate bottle feeding by others.  It seemed like he was practically on a hunger strike!  Finally, in the afternoon we did side-lie nursing, got him to take a good nap and things got better.  He had a very good day on Sunday.  So, I think it was one of those teething issues.

  • My 7 month old did the same thing at 4 months, and it was not teething related, since she just recently cut her first teeth. It really stressed me out but she grew out of it. Try to power through!

    Thanks!
Did anything help to get her through this period? I have been supplementing with BM from bottle so she is not hungry but I want her to nurse as much as possible to avoid supply issues
