Shettles Method

Did any of you use the Shettles Method while ttc? I attempted to use it, but I am conviced I conceived on my ovulation date. There's no way to prove that. Anyway, some people swear by it. If you did use it, did you get the result you were aiming for?

  • We didn't, but I was convinced LO would be a boy because I ovulated three days early and only hit O-1 and O, which if i remember correctly, would be more likely to be boy than girl. Nope. Girl here. With DD, we hit O-4, O-3, O-2, and O-1. Guess we just make girls. :)

  • we didn't use it but according to when we had sex, it worked for us (had sex before O, are having a girl)
  • I'm pretty sure this LO was conceived on O+1 ( which I would have thought meant boy, but little girl here!)
With DS I'm pretty sure it was exactly O day and with DD1 I have no idea...

  • I have a friend and a coworker who both used the Shettles method to attempt to conceive a girl (after having boys), and both did.  Coincidence?  It's a 50/50 proposition any way you look at it.

Same -3 days before O, girl.

  • I'm sure we have timed it out both ways and have 3 girls. We didn't focus on the timing but this one was O-3 and O+1 so who knows which one took. My guess - a girl :)
  • I think the ovum only can be fertilized for 24 hours, so technically we all conceive on our ovulation day (TTC nerd here :)) so Shettles depends on when the sperm was deposited.

We were going to use shettles to try for a boy, so we should have had sex on O day, but it didn't happen, so we ended up conceiving with sperm that was from sex 2 days prior to O, which, according to shettles should be more likely to produce a girl...and yet, we got a boy! :) The girls on the "sway blue" or "sway pink" boards got a little crazy with the shettles and the alkaline/acidic diets though.

Shettles is actually one of the few (possibly only?) method that's actually got some science behind it, and has been proven to be marginally effective in scientific studies.  It still only improves your chances from 50/50 to something like 45/55 but for some people that's enough to try :)

  • Yes we did try the method and we are having what we were aiming for.  Whether it "worked" or not, who knows!!

  • I didn't intentionally but it was "right" for my first two as we only had sex once in the fertile window (day before O with my boy and 4 days before with my girl).  This baby we were more "active" ;)
  • If you ask my DH, he will tell you it worked.

  • Interesting. I didn't use OPK or anything this time around, but I distinctly remember coming home for lunch one day just to have a nooner because I felt like that was the day. Not sure why. Anyway, we were shooting for a girl and that is what we are getting. 50/50 chance, sure. Anyway, I don't miss tracking or obsessing over every stupid symptom or indication I was ovulating. I sure don't miss the tww either!!

  • We tried it out, figured we didn't have anything to lose. One of my nurse friends is a big believer so she helped me figure out the rules of Shettles and when to do it, when to not. Not sure if it worked, but we got what we were "trying" for.

  • @MSUMands my sister is a nurse too and truly buys into it! I agree, I don't know if it worked, but we got what we were aiming for.
