STM vacations while EBF

Im a FTM and EBF. Every August we go on a vacation with family somewhere tropical. My LO will be 8 to 9 montgs by then. So I'm wondering if its harder to do while bf. Do your boobs still leak? If so how would you wear a swimsuit. I know this is premature thinking but we have to decide soon if we're going. I dont want to be stressed ouy about pumping and feeding in a new place and while traveling. If anyone has any advice, please share.
thanks

Re: STM vacations while EBF

  • It's not harder per say. By 8-9 months you shouldn't be leaking. As far as pumping, it's not a big deal. By 8 months EBF is second nature and feeding in a new place should be no different than feeding at home. If say go, have a good time.

  • By then they also eat less often because you will have introduced foods to them. It'll be easy.

  • It will be much easier than having to cart around bottles, formula and bottled water.  By 8 mos, you won't leak and bf will be very natural.  Go and have a blast!
  • It will be much easier by  then. We've gone to the beach several times while all our kids were small and breastfed.  I would definitely not pass up a tropical vacay!!

  • I'm a ftm, but my BFF went on vacation with dh and I when her son was 6months. She ebf, but had introduced some foods. She wasn't leaking and it was quite easy for her and we had a great time. I say go for it!

  • We went on a few vacations while I was BF'ing DS1. At 8-9 months, you'll be on a more established schedule and your LO won't be constantly nursing like now. I nursed often in my swimsuit. I just put a tank top or tshirt on over my suit. That's a good age for vacation because your LO won't be walking yet!!

  • I traveled with DS at 6 and 9 months. No problems. In all honesty it will be more of a hassle worrying about bringing the solid food than breastmilk. I wouldn't hesitate going if I were you!

My boobs stopped leaking with DS around 4 months. The only time they leak now with DD is when I'm nursing her, the other side does. By that age they'll be pretty efficient at nursing so it won't take as long.

  • How does the solid food work while in another country??
Is there a way to make it in advance?
  • If by some chance you are leaking (and you shouldn't by then) try LilyPadz -- they are silicone pads that are waterproof and would be perfect for wearing under a bathing suit. Plus, they'll be eating some solids by then as others mentioned...you can always buy and bring some baby food pouches with you -- really portable, convenient and non breakable!

  • We went in a vaca in September with my cousin and their 7/8 month old. She wasn't breast feeding though. However baby was having bottles and she brought baby food. She found it pretty easy given the fact she had to wash dishes in the hotel room sink! If you are breast feeding and still leak (I wore pads until I stopped at 11 months) you can put them in your dry swim suit and remove them before going on the water. No biggie. Just being extra. As for foods I would bring the veggies/fruits in the squeeze bags and not jars. They are lighter, won't break easily and pack better too. Good luck!
  • You ladies were so much help! Thanks for all the advice and suggestions :)
