If you have flown with your stroller, did you buy a travel bag for it? I plan on gate checking my city mini, the travel bag is crazy expensive so I'm wondering if I can get away with one of those red "gate check" bags I see on amazon.
I know when we ran into this with DS we ended up just buying an umbrella stroller that came with a carrying bag (Chicco C6). It was slightly more expensive than the Baby Jogger bag but we knew eventually we would want a cheap umbrella stroller and that way we didn't have to worry about our nice stroller getting ruined so it was worth it to us.
That said we do have the Baby Jogger carrying case for our double stroller (bought stroller 2nd hand and they threw it in) and it is much more durable than those red gate check bags. I have yet to use it though.
@megsw85 you've flown WestJet right? Did you gate check a full size stroller or umbrella? DH's friend told us some airline will only let you gate check an umbrella.
@araziza - I've flown WestJet and Air Canada. Both accommodated my gigantic BJ City Select, but WestJet was the best about it. I bought the JL Childress travel bag off amazon.ca since I wanted a big enough bag got accommodate the 2nd seat if we ever add it, but I didn't want to pay for the BJ one. They give you a gate check tag when you check your luggage, just make sure that you don't let them put it on the stroller if you plan to use a travel bag.
We are in Orlando now. I have a baby jogger city select double and I got the stokke pram pack for it. I got a gate check sticker at the gate and I did a gate check. I've always done that in the past as well. I had a red gate check bag when I had my city mini and it was ok. One of my wheels broke on the wAy home and I think it was because it didn't offer much protection.
@megsw85 this is the first time we are flying west jet, but I remembered you saying you were really happy so I'm excited to try them out.
@daffy2k thanks for the note about the tag, I'll need to remember that.
@ilovemarfa do you think taking the wheels off like @steamboat1679 suggested would help avoid a problem? I think they are pretty easy to get on and off with the city mini.
West jet for the win. I will only fly with them now. They let you check the baby stuff for free. Air Canada makes you pay for it all. Also their customer service is amazing, I called them before we flew to get some information and they went over everything little thing with me.
I've flown both air canada and westjet - no charge for baby items on either airline! Gate checked strollers with both no problem and no damage...never thought of getting a bag for it. :-?
I do really prefer West Jet, but from where we live the flight times are better on WJ flying west and AC flying east so we do both.
We have the city mini as well and I just gate checked it without anything to protect it. The thought never even crossed my mind. We folded it up and put it in the storage thing and got it out from there is was fine.
I flew allegiant over the holidays and had no problems gate checking the stroller. The most damage done was sending it through the xray machine. The wheels popped off but were easily put back into place after we realized what had happened.
We gate checked our stroller, they just put a tag on it when we checked in. We had to fold the stroller up right at the plane door. And when we for off the plane it was sitting there waiting for us.

I did remove the wheels and kept them in the bag. I had the regular city mini (not gt) and somehow the wheels became warped. I don't know if the set the stroller up against a heat source but it was weird how they warped. Baby jogger sent me replacemebt ones free of charge though.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.
