BLW /finger foods check in

Sorry so late, ladies.  Even though it's a paid holiday today, I'm working from home. :(

How goes it this week?

Re: BLW /finger foods check in

  • Same old here, for the most part. We made another pizza on Saturday night (a veggie one this time) and the girls seemed to really like it. Yesterday E took an unprecedented (for me) nap for an hour and a half, which I used to make another batch of lentil and cheese wedges since those went down so well, and I also made salmon croquettes (I used the recipe for tuna croquettes from the BLW cookbook and swapped the tuna for canned salmon). They had those for lunch today and seemed to love them!

I'm getting a little nervous for our 9 month appointment coming up in a few weeks. Does anyone know if most pedis test iron levels automatically at that appointment? Or would something need to be off for them to do that?

I'm only concerned because I know with BLW (where you skip the iron-fortified cereal, etc.) iron deficiency can be a concern, since their maternal iron stores drop after 6 months. I try to feed them iron-rich foods alongside vitamin C-rich foods when I can, but have had to back off a bit from those due to constipation, so I just hope I'm offering the right things.

I hope M feels better soon!

  • I think I'll have to make some more lentil wedges today, too!  I think I'll add baby oatmeal to them instead of bread crumbs, though.  This time I'll freeze some of them.  The new foods that L has been having are pears, rice, black beans, and pancakes.  I steamed the pears and cut them up into little pieces, but there were too slippery for him to eat. Oops!  So I dished out some rice from my plate and he ate them together.  He loved the black beans and demolished the pancakes.

  • We tried kiwi, lasagna and asparagus.  He was a little unsure about the kiwi at first but after a few bites seemed to enjoy it.  Oh and oatmeal for breakfast is new too and he seems to like this ok.

  • @PumpkinAndThePeanut I'm nervous about the 9 month appt too. My pedi automatically does a blood draw to check iron levels. I've had to cut back on a lot of foods with iron because C was also pretty plugged up (the multivitamins with iron really made it bad, so I may be a horrible mother but we all but stopped those).

I've noticed recently that C hasn't been that big into breakfast, but she's been eating like a champ for lunch and dinner. She effing loves Cheerios. I feel like she probably eats too many but whatevs, she's happy. She's also been on a berry kick. And she loved the split pea lentil soup we made the other night with kale and spinach added!

^ that's great news about the weight gain, @sarabelleATX! And that's funny about the lentil cheese wedges; V and E can't get enough of them! The recipe calls for "mixed herbs." I just throw in some dried parsley and black pepper in mine. And I buy pre-cooked lentils, not sure if that makes any difference. And shredded cheddar cheese.

  • We're trucking along, but he still shoves his mouth full of things and then I have to scrape them out. Especially with any kind of meat and also watermelon. If I give him one piece of a time, he gets mad until I give him the next one and he never swallows the first one. Now that he has his pincer down, at least I'm dealing with small pieces and not a mouthful of huge chunks. And he does seem to actually eat and swallow like a third of what he's given, which is improvement.

One problem that we're having is that he is over applying with chewing. If something is smooth, like yogurt, he will grind his front top and bottom teeth together after every bite. I'm not sure what I can do about that except hold off on smooth things for now.

Some new things that he's had recently and loved are spaghetti squash and kiwi.

  • @Pumpkinandthepeanut most foods such as yogurt and cheese are fortified with iron and vitamins (especially D now that we are all slapping on the sunscreen) so it should be enough. Do you give vitamin supplements? Since we are more BLW these days (because E won't let me feed her at all) I've started the supplements.

As for trying something new I made salmon pate and mackerel pate. Both were a hit. I was going to make ham and cheese croquettes but might try the salmon ones you mentioned.

  • No, @lolalipsy, I don't do the supplements, just the vitamin D drops. I know the iron supplements can cause constipation so I've hoped to avoid them. I called the pedi yesterday to confirm our upcoming appointment and asked about a blood test and they do do them at the 9 month appointment so I guess we'll see in a couple of weeks.
