Sudden decrease in morning pumping amount?

Hi - I posted this in Breastfeeding, but no one seems to have noticed it, so I thought I would post it here as well to hopefully get more replies :)

I am hoping someone has had experience with this and can help me!  I used to pump 9-12 ounces every morning before work, sometimes less if LO was feeding at night.  I am a teacher, and just came off a long 3.5 week break a couple weeks ago, but I still pumped every morning and made a couple of bottles.  Since I have returned to work, I am only making 5-6 ounces each morning!  And it takes a long time to let down, and pump! I do not make up for it later in the day, which leaves me tight for milk each day.  Some other facts:

-LO is 8.5 months old, but 7 months adjusted.
-LO is eating solids, but just two meals a day that are 1-2 ounces each (she's not a fan).  I have continued to pump the same, though.
-I have two pumps, one at home and one at work.  They are both Amedas, and if something was wrong with the one at home (that I use in the am) I would notice that I pump more at work, but I do not!
-I eat, drink, and do all of that other healthy stuff well, and have been.
-No new meds or antibiotics for me.
-LO did get a yeast infection at about the same time, but I cannot see any connection.

Thanks for any help you ladies can offer! Overall, I used to get 25-30 ounces each day.  Now it is 20-25 and I added in a pumping session. I just don't want to make myself crazy!

Re: Sudden decrease in morning pumping amount?

  • Your body might be adjusting to your baby's needs. You might be getting your period or ovulating which can affect your supply. If you are concerned, maybe up your water and calorie intake?

  • My supply permanently decreased all of a sudden and hindsight, I realized it was when I started ovulating and subsequently I got my first pp period.  Adding another pump session and taking Gaia brand of mother's milk supplements helped me get back to meeting his needs. good luck!

  • Have you checked your pump parts? I know with the Medela PISAs you have to occasionally change out valves and tubes.

I've had a pumping slump lately too- I've added a short pump with my manual in the evenings and on weekends and that's helped. I use that pump to mix with her solids.

  • The pump is a Ameda Purely Yours.  I am not sure which parts are the valves, but I have two and it doesn't seem to matter which I use.  Should I get new hygiene kits?
