hybrid cloth diapers..advice

I am a FTM and am looking for advice, tips, or personal experiences with hybrid cloth diapers.

Re: hybrid cloth diapers..advice

  • What are you meaning be hybrid? Are you talking about AIOs or like gdiapers that have a cloth outer shell and could use either a disposable or cloth inserts?

I, personally, hate AIOs because they don't work for my son. He leaks EVERY time. But a lot of people love them.

I use the gDiaper cloth system at home, but will use the disposable inserts when we travel. I love my gdiapers. But it goes both ways. Some people really hate them.

  • I apologize I am not great with cloth diaper lingo yet. I was looking into the cloth shell and the disposable inserts.
  • I am the opposite. Hated gdiapers but the grovia were probaby my favorite hybrid. However, I felt like they are for smaller babies. They are narrow on the bum.

I honestly love love Bumgenius freetime diapers (AIO) and their 4.0 (pocket) I'm not a fan of stuffing pockets but BG are pretty easy to stuff. The flips (hybrid) I felt like the insert would shift a lot and baby's bum would be on the TPU shell.

  • You're going to find the love/hate relationship with every brand of diaper, cloth or otherwise. :). Like @Adam-n-Emily said, she hated g's but liked grovia. I have a friend who swears Grovia is the best diaper on the market. I, on the other hand, didn't like them. Grovias didn't fit my kid right.

I also use BG 4.0 pockets as overnight diapers. They work but I I really don't like them. I hate stuffing pockets. HATE IT. They work great but I don't like them. But as I said, AIOs don't work on my chunky monkey, either. :)

You might look into one of the trial systems where you can sample several different styles before having to invest. Good luck!

  • I love gdiapers!!!! Have used them for 25 months. Never had one issue. Their disposable insert is a lot better than a regular disposable. A regular disposable takes 500 years to decompose and gdiapers, 150 days. You can compose the pee ones.

I use the cloth inserts all the time, even when we travel. I use the disposable insert if for some reason she is pooping a lot, or she was sick one time and had diarrhea, so we used the disposable insert. Oh, and the rare time I have to strip the cloth, I use the disposable insert.

I don't like the AIOs, I think they are a huge pain. Grovia was ok but only when she was really small.

Gdiapers are the least bulky. And you have to watch bulky b/c their pants won't fit.

I use Planet Wise for my wet bags. And Rockin Green as my detergent.

DH and I tell everyone how much we love gdiapers.

  • Hated G diapers as DD got older. I found they worked for the first month great but the rise was ridiculously short. We still have leftover inserts for the covers.

We switched to pockets and some prefolds. It really depends on what fits best for your baby. Short/tall/skinny/chunky, some will fit great and others won't.

I second checking out the cloth diapering board. If I remember right they have a few links to some helpful websites as well.

  • I really liked the Gro-Via Diapers but have also used best bottom diapers, fuzi-buns, and misc. pocket diapers.

We did pre-folds and covers when my son was a newborn. I don't remember when we switched to pockets, but he just became too wiggly to mess with a snappi.

Now we use all pockets (Alvas and Sunbaby) during the day, and hybrid fitteds at night with a cover.

I plan on ordering some AIOs to try out with the new baby. I get pretty lazy when it comes to stuffing pockets :P

Like PPs have said, it is all about finding out what works best for you and baby.

ETA: The Cloth Diaper Compendium is a great resource on FB. I just found out about that group and I wish I had known about it earlier!

    THIS!

With my son the "Flip" diapers from bum genius were great... HATED them on my daughter!  With her I preferred Fuzzi Buns.  Not only will you have things you like and hate about each type, different diapers fit different kids differently too.

As a general rule, I need diapers that have several ways to adjust the rise and a smaller leg hole because my kids have skinny legs :-)

Definitely look into a trial system so you can get a chance to try different brands.  Don't stock up on cloth diapers before baby comes.  Instead set aside money for the investment and buy them when you get a feel for what works best for you.  Also, many moms who CD don't start using the cloth until their babies are between 9-10lbs or about 8 weeks old.  So this is something else to keep in mind when getting started.  They don't always work out great in that first few weeks.  As your baby grows you may find yourself changing brands a couple of times to accommodate new found mobility or suddenly skinny legs after a growth spurt.

  • I'll just add that you don't have to wait to CD. I started with my DD when the paper diapers from the hospital and shower ran out (about a week old). With DS I used paper in the hospital but out cloth on him to come home and never went back. But like I said, we use gdiapers with my son and they have newborn tiny diapers. And DS was a monster at birth and weighed in at 9.2. :)

  • We used right away. No need to wait. I liked the newborn cloth b/c it left a space for the umbilical cord nub.
