Advice?!

Since I'm living with my mom while my husband is gone and my insurance only gave me ONE option of a pediatrician I could use for my daughter! And i hate it there! I wish she could have my OB as well because he's that amazing! Haha but anyways I brought up the concern my daughter is very constipated and only has a BM every 2-3 days she is in a lot a lot of pain trying to push through the day. Maybe I am just a nervous wreck new mom but I hate seeing her in this pain!! My pediatrician gave me no tips how to help her, but any one know of anything that could?!

Re: Advice?!

  • I find it a little hard to believe the ped had NO advice at all. When you brought her in, what did the doctor say?

  • Are you breastfeeding or formula feeding?  If you're breastfeeding, eat things that make you poop- lots of fiber filled foods, prunes, etc.  If your pediatrician isn't helping, bring her to the ER.

This. I mean, when you brought it up, did he just stare at you blankly? Or did he say something to the tune of "That's normal/Eat more fiber/Keep an eye on it for x days". I'm thinking that this is more likely.

If you are concerned however, I would call again. Or if you don't think the doctor will help, take a trip to the ER.

  • He said it was normal b/c her body is still adjusting. But the pain she seems to b in doesn't seen normal. I asked here because maybe people had "newer" advice since my mom said to give her water but her last baby was 20 years ago and so many things changed since then. & yes I did google and was seeing once a day forums I told this to my doctor as well but stil continued to say every 2-3 is fine...

  • Step away from the internet. Don't give her water. Go back to the doctor or the ER or both. GL!

  • Do not give her water. Are you breast or formula feeding?

Is she in pain all the time or just while straining? Does her belly feel hard or soft between poops?

  • Oh and call you pedi back.

And call your insurance. What do you mean they only gave you one option? Did you call to ask who was covered and get assigned to him, or did you look up pedis and find out there's only one covered one in a reasonable distance?

I'd drive further if you don't like him.

  • Also, if you're EBF, she may not poop every day.

  • Maybe it's gas? My first had terrible gas as a newborn which seemed terribly painful. Our pedi who is AWESOME had us giving her drops for infant gas....
  • Also try bicycling her legs, and laying her in your lap belly down and rubbing her back. It all helps get gas out. May be worth a shot.
  • Like pp I agree with bicycling her legs and maybe a trip to the er for peace of mind. I thought babies couldn't have water for a while.

An ebf baby may only poop 2-3 times a week. Still completely normal. They're using most of what you give them, there's not much waste

You're right. Babies should not have water.

  • @adeleon829 - based on your pic I'm guessing you are on tricare for insurance. You can go to the tricare website for your region & change your child's or your PCM yourself to someone else. From my experience Tricare does just assign you to a provider, but if you don't like them you aren't required to keep using them.
  • A BM every 2-3 days is totally normal.  If you're nursing, even only every 5-7 days can be normal.  The grunting and pain is almost definitely gas.  Babies go through a really gassy, fussy stage between around 2-6 weeks when their systems are regulating.

I think everything is fine, don't stress!

Exactly. Even 1-2 a week is considered normal.

  • Try not to worry to much, change your diet a little like PP said and my would go 5-7 w/o pooping becuase he was BF. It is perfectly normal.

If breastfed and baby is very young, baby should be pooping almost every time they eat.  there are certain ages where your baby may use all the nutrients and only poop every few days or once a week, but not in the first 3-6 weeks of life.  before that, infequent poops in a bfed baby most often means baby is not getting enough breastmilk.  how many wet diapers are you seeing in a day?

This simply isn't true. Some breastfed newborns don't even poop every day. Any doctor or trained LC would be able to tell you that.

Haha about your super funny jokes, though.
Agree.  DS2 would go days between poops, and his doctor was not concerned until he reached 8 days.

  • Thanks for all the comments. I Haven't had a chance to read them all yet. However I continued formula feeding her what they were feeding in the NICU . I also do have tricare and they have been giving me problems ever since I moved. I have called numerous times and tell me it's the only one who takes tricare, I'm not sure if it's because I'm currently not in any military area I have no idea. I may just pay out of pocket, no insurance to go to a better more reliable pediatrician.

If you tell a new pediatrician that you are self pay (aka, do not give them your insurance information or attempt to file), you can usually get really great discounts and/or payment plans on services!

OP, what type of Tricare plan do you have? If you have Tricare prime but are not living near a post, that may be why you're so limited. I don't know your specific military situation, but if you can, switching to Tricare Standard might give you more options and would give you out-of-network coverage too so that even if your doc is out of network, you would still have some coverage so you wouldn't have to pay completely out of pocket.

Thank you!! I will look into this! I did not know you could switch. I do have tricare prime (:
