  oh no. I'm so sorry! DD doesn't have them but our 2 neighbor's LOs have them and it is so scary. My heart hurts for moms that have to see their poor babies go through it.
  
  I've seen it happen once and she immediately grabbed a cold washcloth and took off his sweatshirt and tee shirt and laid him on his side- it all happened so fast and she was so calm while my heart was racing!
  
  Is it only caused by fevers?

  We had a few happen to T but knock on wood, they don't happen every time, as long as we keep his fevers from getting that high. But I get nervous every time he burns up.
  
  The pedi says it is not painful for them and there isn't a risk of brain damage, but still it is so awful to watch.

  Yes they are only caused by fevers. It's tricky cause he can be fine one minute and then a fever will hit. It doesn't even have to be high just a quick change in his temp. He should outgrow them by 5 but in the meantime it really sucks:(

  My nephew had one of these last night we think. My SIL has laid him down for a nap and found him blue and shaking. He had a pretty high fever and we suspect he has croup. She is taking him to the doctor today to see for sure what's going on. She actually called 911 and talked to DH on the phone for advice as he is a medic. I can't imagine going through that, I'd lose it for sure!
