Sippy Cups

Are you and LO already using sippy cups? What are you putting in them? Water? Milk? Juice?

LO has only had breastmilk and hasn't tried a sippy cup yet

Re: Sippy Cups

  • There is no reason to give LO juice or water unless your pediatrician recommended it. Some people start BLWing or giving purees at this point but that is really just to get them to learn and you only use plain foods. Juice is basically pure sugar and water will fill up LO without giving any nutrients.

And I don't think there is any way DD would use a sippy cup yet, her motor skills aren't there yet.

  • Also, cow's milk isn't recommended until 12 months. You could certainly try beast milk if you think LO is ready for a cup though.

  • LO acts like shes almost ready for a cup. She holds her bottle and the boob with both hands. But she couldn't actually drink out of it I don't think.
  • My baby puts his hands on his bottle and knocks it out of his mouth. Sippy cups haven't even crossed my mind. I still don't think he's even aware what a bottle is!
  • A sippy cup has never crossed my mind. Lo hasn't even had a bottle since he was 6 weeks. .. way too early for a cup

  • Nope. My baby is only 4 months old. No solids and all of her milk has come straight from the boob or in a bottle. Even when she does finally get a sippy, it will be breast milk or water. DS almost never gets juice and this LO won't either.

It must be a UO, but I can't understand why we are having so many discussions about sippy cups, solids, etc. when most of our babies are still in the 3-5 month range. Why are so many rushing to the next stage before the babies are even ready. What's next, beginning to plan the 1st birthday parties at 6 months?
This for sure! I know my LO is one of the younger ones on this board but I don't understand the rush? Maybe as a FTM I am missing something? But I didn't think sippy cups were necessary for quite awhile especially since she will still be on breast milk (or formula if my supply doesn't get its shit together) until 1.

  • Not any time soon. Between all the bottles and pumping parts, I do not need another thing to wash. My LO will be 5 months in one more week, but I am waiting until 6 months to start anything other than breastmilk.

I did pick the date for his first birthday party ;)

  • I am with ShanMarie on this. Why are so many people trying to rush to solids, sippies, etc. I don't think solids are very exciting. It's just one more thing I have to remember to put buy or put in my bag when we are out and about. With ds1 we waited until 6 months. He didn't really start using a sippy until 1 year when we added milk and water. At 2 DSs motor skills seemed to be on track. No need to rush into anything.
  • No, I haven't even tought about it. I probably won't start a cup until 9 mos or so.

I'm happy to hear most are on the same page about this. I have an app called kidfolio and it said that my baby can now start a sippy cup with water or diluted juice. LO is 4 and a half months. I thought it was rushing things, so I wanted to send some feelers out.

My friends dr. is pretty old school and has suggested she give her LO diluted juice. He suggested this at the baby's 2 month appointment. She's not doing this.

LO is going to stick to breastmilk from me or the bottle. We can try the cup at around six months with water. DH and I don't drink juice or pop at home, only water. so I don't plan on having LO drinking much juice either.

I might give her a big steak tomorrow night though. Maybe some sushi with chopsticks?
  • I'd recommend talking to your pedi and doing your own research instead of taking suggestions from an app. In fact, I'd probably ditch an app that said to start juice in a sippy at 4 mos.

I actually hardly ever look at the app. I don't take anything it says too much to heart. It talks a lot about babies development and milestones that should be reached by a certain time. Since babies aren't on timers and develop their own way, I try to just go with the flow.

I just found it interesting that sippy cups were suggested so early and was curious to see if anyone was using them.

Just to be clear, I don't use apps for medical advice or as a guide on how to raise my kid lol.
  • So I guess this is a UO, but my LO does drink from cups.  Not sippy cups yet, and she needs help, but since she has come home from the hospital she has had some breastmilk in cups.  She wouldn't latch for the first week, and it was messy at first, but she drinks out a cup like you and me.  Now she has gotten to the point where she is pretty good at it.  She holds the cup and tries to tip it in her mouth.  I don't see why I wouldn't do a sippy cup when she is ready.  Cuts down on the chances of bottle mouth, and don't have to worry about weaning her from bottle later.

That being said, she will only get breastmilk until 6 months old, and even then still probably only breastmilk and water in a sippy cup, maybe very diluted juice on occasion.  LO is still fed with a bottle most of the time when she is away from me, I will probably switch around 6 months and let her tell me when she is ready to get rid of the bottle for good.

  • My baby can't hold a bottle on her own. Not ready for a sippy cup.

  • Way too early IMO, for my baby anyway. I think we started giving water to DD1 in a sippy cup around 9 months. It might have been sooner, but as long as I'm being honest it was really only her dcp that have her one and I totally don't remember. She had a bottle for all breast milk and/or formula until she was about 1, and then we transitioned to the sippy. And I wouldn't start with juice, even diluted. They should get their calories from nutritious food and not empty, sugar filled juices.

  • I thought water wasn't good for babies under one? Something about the risk of water toxicity/water poisoning?

Dd1 never held her own bottle but did fine with her sippy at 7-8 months.
