Left side face dysfunction

Someone tell me they've had this and it went away... I'm really trying to just relax about it and tomorrow if it isn't better I'll be calling the doc (everything is closed today except emergency and I don't feel like it's emergency worthy)

When I woke up this morning I noticed when I was laughing and eating the left side of my mouth (my lips) weren't behaving the same. Then I went and looked in the mirror and smiled and it's not even at all. Then I realized my left eye isn't blinking all the way. Nothing is numb- I have full sensation, it's just not "working" properly. I'm 11 days post partum.
Anyone have any insight or experience? If it's still there tomorrow (same or worse) I'll definitely be calling but thought I would check with you ladies.

  • It sounds slightly like Bell's palsy. My friend just woke up one day with the same thing going on. Wasn't after birth or anything traumatic, just happened. I know she saw the dr and it eventually went back to normal but it took awhile.
  • That's the only result I've found on any searches... I was hoping that wasn't the only thing out there.

I had Bell's palsy about three years ago. It came on 2 days before my brother's wedding (those are some fun pictures). I was prescribed steroids and an antibiotic but didn't feel like they helped me to recover any faster. It took about a month to resolve for me. It was more of an annoyance than anything. So long as your eye can blink to keep it moist, you should be fine. I think I read somewhere that B12 is a supplement people recommend for it, but can't really remember.

I did hear a story from a past coworker who had it after her c/s, but mine wasn't pregnancy or birth related at all.

  • Thanks @mamap19 --That makes me feel a bit better. It doesn't hurt or anything, just like you said, it's annoying. I'm EBF so I wonder how that would effect if they would give me anything (referring to the steroids) and I don't have any of the infections that can cause it- if antibiotics would even do anything... I guess I'll find out tomorrow when I call.

  • @katiemarie86 when I searched I saw you had posted, I almost just PMed you right away but it seems like my symptoms are much less intense than yours were-- although this is just the first day I'm noticing. Thanks so much.

  • Thank you @sapatel1, I just get all weirdo about that stuff since I don't take meds for anything generally.

  • My doctor at the time was an idiot, really. She didn't test me for anything, just threw whatever pills at me. That's how she treated anything I saw her for though, which is why our relationship didn't last long at all. I think she gave me the medicine "just in case."

A lot of cases of Bell's palsy resolve on their own. It's just a matter of time. The prednisone she gave me made me feel awful so I stopped taking it after about a week. Fwiw, I was just on that same medicine 2 weeks ago for bronchitis, so I imagine it would probably be okay while BF. Hoping your doc gives you good news and it clears up quickly! I remember how worried I was when it happened to me.

  • Eesh yeah it was a good call not to stick with that doc I'd say! I'm hoping for the best, thanks so much @mamap19

  • @ashleywiz - how are you feeling today?
Just wanted to add that my H suggested you try acupuncture...
    Hope you are feeling better.

  • Bells palsy? My husband had it a few years back they gave him steroids it went away after a couple weeks
  • So the fact that your eye is involved means it is likely Bell's palsy, and not something more serious, like a stroke. Steroids have only been shown to be effective if given within first five days, so try to get to a doctor tomorrow - to be honest, primary care doctor may be better than ob.

Most importantly, protect your eye! Natural tears throughout the day and an ointment on st night. You can get a corneal ulcer if your eye doesn't fully close while sleeping
  • @frohotch, it closes, it just doesn't "seal" if that makes sense? I haven't had any dry eye or anything. I make sure to force it closed frequently (takes a bit of focus but I can get it)

Thanks for checking up @cnctf & @goldenb. No better no worse today. Called the clinic and OB had no clue what to say to me...haha but the regular internal med people just told me to monitor it since I still have sensation to the areas and that they still "work" (ie not true paralysis) and to make an appointment if it isn't any better by Thursday.  I'm not droopy or anything, just crooked. Haha.

Thanks, ladies. This is just feels so funky.

Quick update: I went to the clinic today and it was officially officially diagnosed as Bells Palsy. Because none of the medications are proven effective and because it's mild, the doc went over what some people are given (prednisone, antibiotics & anti inflammatory) but did not recommend any for me unless I felt strongly that I wanted to be able to "take" something (which I don't- it's annoying but not painful or actually debilitating).

Sooo I am just to monitor it and keep working on my facial muscles even though this is a nervous system malfunction.

I asked about acupuncture and he said the research on that is also inconclusive so unless I am in pain, it isn't likely to help. Even though going in did nothing, at least I got it checked out and other than a "lazy face" I'm good to go.

  • Well, all things considered, that sounds like good news to me. Sorry you have to go through it, but hopefully you'll be back to normal soon!
