Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Only poops once a week?

My baby is almost 4 months and only poops once a week.  This started at 2 months.  Before that he used to poop at least once a day, sometimes 2-3 times a day.  This is also my 4th baby and none of my other babies did this.  The doctor says this is normal and happens to some babies.  When he goes, it is a giant explosion.  To the point where I have to cut his clothes off because there is so much poop stretching from his back all the way down his pant legs and onto his socks.  So gross!  I can't afford to keep cutting and throwing away clothes every week.  So frustrated and he seems so uncomfortable.  Also because of this, he has really awful smelling gas - poor little guy!  Anyone else have this problem?  Is it safe to give him a glycerin suppository after a couple days of no poop?  He is only getting breast milk so I don't see why it is so blocked up.

Re: Only poops once a week?

  • This is very normal for a breastfed baby.  It is such an efficient food that there isn't a lot of waste.  I would not give a baby anything for constipation without a doctor's ok.

  • It's normal.

Quit cutting off and throwing away the clothes. That's just ridiculous.

  • I wouldn't cut anything off. Sounds like he'd need a bath anyways. I'd just bathe and soak the clothes on oxyclean

  • I don't know why you cut off the clothes. Give him a bath if the poop gets anywhere that you can't use wipes on and throw the clothes in the wash.

  • My daughter was doing this and now she poops after every time she eats. Be happy it's only once a week. Haha.

Oh and if you want to help him go more often, I would first try more tummy time, moving his legs in a bicycle motion, and, if really desperate, put a thermometer in his butt as if you were checking his temperature. You can also cut out cheese from your diet.

  • The only reason I cut off his clothes is that it is so bad that they are beyond laundering.  Also, sometimes I am not at home and don't have access to a bath and don't want to pull his clothes up over his head and get poop all over his head.  My other kids I was able to sort of roll their onesies up to hide the poop as I lifted it up over their head, but I can't do this with these huge explosions.
  • My son did this, he would go forever without pooping and then it was an explosion.

  • My son does this but my dr said once every 7 days is to long and to give a glycerin suppository after 3 days. You can get the children kind and cut in half. Also I'm not a huge fan of rice cereal but she said rice cereal mixed with some breast milk will help him go more often. Hope this helps :)
  • It's normal for a breast fed baby. I wouldn't cut the clothes off, I'd just take them off and put baby right in the bath and the clothes in cold water at home.

  • Normal. Enjoy it.

Don't be afraid of poop. Quit wasting clothes like that.

  • My baby started going once every 7-10 days. My doctor told me at 14 days is when he would get concerned, but at that point give her some prune juice with a bottle of milk. But every time she goes before the 14 day mark. It's normal. I understand being annoyed with having poppy clothes but I'm not sure why you don't just trust your doctor when he said it's normal.

  • Just an FYI but pretty much any onesie is made to go over the head but also to go down over the butt too.  I figured this out from someone on the bump so if there is an explosion you do not have to pull it over their head but can go down instead.
