One & Done: Only child

Bedtime/Wake time

We have officially dropped naps. They were becoming a PITA and putting me in a horrible mood trying to get ds to sleep. So I moved up bedtime. We used to start at 8:30, now we start the routine at 7:15. He's generally asleep an hour later and is up for the day at 7am.

But he also seems to get tired and starts zoning out at like 6 or 6:30. Soooooo do I move up bedtime again? When do your kids go to bed and wake (especially if they don't nap)?

Also: I feel like I have an infant again and I'm going to be trapped at home insanely early in the evening! I enjoyed my "night owl" kid who took naps. What are we going to do come summer when it's light out til 9 and it'd be nice to spend time outside after dinner? Seriously, this summer, ds's bedtime was 9:30. I doubt sleeping in will be an option; it took all of these 3 years to get him to sleep til 7.

Re: Bedtime/Wake time

  • I have an older kiddo, but she still sleeps kinda early.. because she's up at 6am for school.  She gets into bed at 7, and reads for 1 hour.. lights off at 8.

Previous to school, she was a 7pm girl for years and years and years.  And unfortunately, we couldn't mess much with that.  Even during vacations when we wanted her up later (like for special things, fireworks, shows, etc).. anything past like 7:30 and she zoned out, or even fell asleep in the car.  Then she was a beast if we woke her.  We just learned we couldn't do night things as much until she was older.  Now that she is, she can stay awake longer during special events.  But not as a toddler.

So we were kinda trapped in sometimes.  For us, that didn't matter as much.. we weren't "night" people. We're happy inside just watching tv lol.. I imagine for someone who likes to be out more and later, it would be tough.

  • Ds gave up naps just after two. I Missed them for awhile as well. He will be four in two weeks. We have to be out of the house by seven each morning. We start night time routine at 7:30 and he is in bed by 8. I'm off during the summer and we adjust to sleeping 8:45-7:30.

  • I feel your pain! DS is also three and always took a nice nap in the afternoon until recently. He sometimes naps at school, but sometimes just "rests." Today we were home because of the holiday, he did not nap, and was falling asleep at the dinner table. He used to go to bed at 8:30 and up at 6:30 with a 2 hour nap. We've started getting ready for bed around 7:30 now but I can't really move it any earlier with our schedules.

  • We still do a nap or two during the day. He either takes 1- 2 hour nap or 2- 1 hour naps. Then he goes to bed around 7:30 or 8. Gets up at 7 - 7:15 every morning.

Needless to say we like sleep!
  • DS still takes one nap around noon or so for anywhere from 45 minutes to 2/12 hours. He usually goes to bed between 7:15 and 7:45 and wakes anywhere between 6:00 and 7:00. He seems to do ok with some fluctuation of bed time. We just watch his cues mostly.

We're going through that right now. He only naps 2-3 days a week now, and gets groggy and cranky by 7 when he doesn't. Bedtime is usually 8.

I'm inclined to move up bedtime about half an hour and feed him early. Just temporarily give up on the whole family dinner thing that all the current articles say is the number one factor in your kid's future success. (No guilt.) Just not the stage for it.

A complication for us is that DH is home with him during the day and still really enjoys the break. And it's when he showers. And then DH works nights and I do bedtime. So one of us is inconvenienced either way. No nap means easy bedtime for me and a free productive evening, but no real break for DH. A nap means an energetic kid who starts bedtime at 8 and maybe gives up and falls asleep at 10:30.

  • My LO still naps since he's only 19-months old.  He takes 1 nap in the middle day and it can be anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on where he is that day.  He goes to bed at 8 but often sits in his crib and plays/sings/fusses/etc until close to 9.  He gets up at 8:30ish (DH works later in the mornings so LO is pretty much free to sleep until he wants to).

I dread the day we lose the nap.

If it makes you feel better, I'm pretty sure they did a study recently (or at least, looked more carefully into the "dinner" one) and found that it's not the eating dinner together that makes it a factor; it's the togetherness, the talking and listening, and the interest in each others' lives, that ideally happens once a day. A family sitting down to dinner together when each person is self absorbed in their cell phones is not going to get much out of it, whereas a family who eats staggered meals but still interacts meaningful at other times of the day can mean everything.
