How many ounces a day?

edited January 2014 in April 2013 Moms
A week ago we switched to EFF and he barely eats 20-24 ounces a day. If he eat solids I feel like Im force feeding him. (No wonder why he is skinny, he must have not been eating enough? I was BFing and giving formula a few times a day. Now that Im pregnant, he didn't nurse well at all! That made up my mind to wean.)

Google is confusing.

I thought food before one is just for fun and they still need to eat their regular amount of BM/F until a year for the nutrients.

But I hear people cutting back BM/F because they are giving solids.

What is right? Ugh.

Re: How many ounces a day?

  • Well for me, I go by the general rule of: 70/30 formula to solids ratio.. I don't cut back the amount of formula, but I am not as crazy about him getting specifically 'this amount' anymore because it changes a lot day by day. Some days, he drinks upwards of 40-45oz a day. Some other days, it is a struggle for me to get in 24oz in a 24 hour period. So, I say that their regular amount varies and each baby has a different regular.

I let him eat a lot of solids. Example would be about half of a travel applesauce, a good amount of chicken.. like perhaps the size of two fingers together.. and a hand full of puffs. He would probably still eat more (until he throws up) but I stop him when he is more playing than eating.

I also wouldn't worry if your baby seems skinny, unless of course he hasn't gained weight or he has lost weight.

  • Thanks! I hate it when info is all over the place and I can't find a consistent answer!

He is a little over 16 pounds and almost 27 inches tall, at 9 months. He isn't scary skinny, but he's definitely not fat! ;)

  • I also read to cut back to closer to 24 oz once they are consistently eating solids. Will eats (and when I say eats I mean inhales) 3 meals a day. Some days I need to force him his bottles and we're lucky if he gets 20 oz it her days he'll easily take almost 30 oz no problems. I not stressed about it as he still takes in quite a bit and his table food is always a mix of fruits, veggies proteins and carbs. I am just hoping that this will mean his transition off bottles will be easier come 2.5 months from now.

  • DD just dropped a bottle on her own near Christmas. I was offering her 30oz a day (over 5 bottles) and she would take between 24-28. Now I offer her 26oz a day (over 4 bottles) and she takes between 16-24, but it usually falls around 20. If she were finishing her bottles I'd offer more, but she always leaves an oz or two. She gets 3 meals, no snacks yet (although sometimes when DS is having a snack she wants whatever he's having so I will offer her little bits of it). She's a decent size, 30 1/4 inches and 21.09 lbs at her appt last week.

  • We are now weaning to FF from EBF and I've had some issues with this as well; I found that 24-32 oz was the 'normal' range for this age. Even though he seems content during the day, he was still waking up 1-2 times per night and seeming to be really hungry. I have now set a schedule that we'll follow for him that would have him taking 24-28 oz per day. I am hoping this helps him sleep better and a fuller tummy :)

  • We're at about 25 oz a day plus three meals and our pedi told us at 9 months he should also be getting 1-2 snacks.

Bradley has 3 meals, two snacks and 5-6 oz of breast milk during the day when we're apart. I brought up concern about my supply and his pedi told me to up him to 3 meals, 2 snacks and give whatever milk I pump. He's a really good eater and said he should have no problem with that little of milk as long as he gets enough cheese, yogurt, etc. I ran it by a lactation consultant and she agreed. So that's what we do. It's been a month now and all is well.
