Purees and Solids ?

Are your kids mostly eating purees, solids, or a combo of both at this time?   We have been trying purees for quite some time now.  However, lately it seems that she doesn't really like it and you almost have to force her mouth open to try the new ones.  She has a few favorites that she likes and will eat.  But she never eaten a large quantity of the baby food- she won't eat an entire jar of the smallest jars.  I normally make the larger jars into 3 meals for her.   She seems to prefer her snacks (puffs, cheeto type ones, and yogurt bites) and then bites of our food.   Just trying to figure out if we should give up on getting her to eat the purees and just stick with the cut up pieces of our food now.

Re: Purees and Solids ?

  • He still likes purees (my kid will eat anything and everything), and I am still giving some to him to use up the stash I made, but he is mostly doing solids now as of about three weeks ago (just turned 9months on the 14th). It's a lot easier just feeding him pieces of what we have for dinner, and I made the switch because it didn't seem to matter either way.

  • I'm pretty sure 9 months was about how old my girls were when they switched from purees to small pieces of our food. If she is eating table foods happily and without issue, I say go for it!

  • We use both. When we are at home and what we are eating is suitable for him, I just give him some of that. When we are on the go, we use pouches. When I am sending food to the nanny, I sometimes send a pouch or applesauce because it's easy... but sometimes I send cut-up meat or fruit cups that he can eat as finger foods. He is really getting the hang of the finger foods, although a lot still ends up in his bib!

  • 9 times out of 10 now, he will not eat by me trying to feed him. So he is eating mostly solids. The only problem we have right now is he stuffs his cheeks, so I am working on setting two pieces down at a time.

He does seem like he allows me to feed him from the spoon more often if I put down food that he can grab.. so he grabs a piece and eats it.. then I spoon feed him something. Which I did today. He had sharp cheddar cheese, ham, yogurt (1/3 chobani), and a banana (1/3).

I think our kiddies are starting to become more independent and so they want to do things themselves now.

  • She is eating finger foods most of the time. I feed her yogurt, but that's about it these days. She only wants to feed herself.

Same. He will only eat puree from an Ella's pouch. He will eat from a spoon sometimes though whether it's soup, rice, stew, or beans if he is in a patient mood. I try to offer one 'spoon' meal a day to keep him practicing even though he would prefer all fingerfoods.

  • We did BLW with DD2 and DD3, so we skipped purees entirely.

With DD1, we were still doing purees at 9 months but also offering some table foods. I know she was completely on table foods by 12 months, but I don't remember exactly what the process of converting her was like.

  • We have been on solids for a couple months. He will refuse any veggie/ protein purée we try at this point but will still take fruits okay. He's a champ at eating solids so unless we are on the go, we don't really try to push purees any more.

Made LO blueberry wheat pancakes this morning and he wasn't a fan. Gagged on them every time. Who doesn't Ike pancakes?

Haha, my 33 year old BIL HATES pancakes. Hates them. What a weird thing to dislike!

OP: We did BLW so she's never had a puree. She does love yogurt and is (thankfully) getting more efficient at hitting her mouth with the spoon.

  • We are doing both, but most of her solid intake is from purees still.  She gets pieces of our food with every meal, but she also gets her own puree.
Question:  Those babies that are on mostly table solids, how much water are they drinking with a meal?  LO is still figuring out sippy cups and barely gets an ounce a day.  I feel like as we decrease her purees in favor of solids, that she should be getting more water.

  • @sapphire021, Will took to a sippy cup right away. H does drink quite a bit of water because of it. However, I wouldn't worry too much if your child is still drinking enough oz of breast milk or formula per day.

CJ still isn't a huge fan of textures. She's mostly on purees. I give her eggs which she eats herself, bread, and she's had pancakes. I tried chicken but that didn't go over well. Eh, not in any hurry though. Her pincher grasp is great, so it's just her needing to get used to textures. I need to make a few changes to my diet before I feel comfortable feeding her from my plate.

This is pretty much us as well. My LO  isn't in a rush to do anything and seems to still enjoy purees. I've been introducing her to finger foods and she'll go for it but a lot of it still winds up in her lap.

She has a hard time adapting to new textures. I'm trying to do thicker purees like mashed potatoes instead of pureed and it's not going well.  She does however LOVE applesauce and we do a lot of that :)

  • We are doing a combo of both.  We just started adding more and more "real food" to her tray. Now she mainly wants those.  She starts with finger food, about half way thru she will take a container of puree, then finish with finger foods.  Feeding her takes forever now!

  • Warner still likes purées (10+ months) and is getting a bit better about not gagging on solids, but we're working on it! I try to so a combination of both purées and solids at each meal. If I could get enough solid fruits and veggies into him we'd ditch the purées! But it is a reliable way to get them into him right now :) plus he loves those veggies pouches!!

Thanks!  The pedi didn't seem concerned either, as LO is still getting at least 30oz of formula daily.  I guess I just assumed that she would need more water if eating more solids, but I guess it doesn't work like that yet.
