June 2014 Moms

*~* Born To Run June Bugs Check In *~*

This is a weekly thread for runners who are due June 2014, that is posted on Mondays. All who run--or who want to start running--are welcome, regardless of mileage, pace, ability, size, shape, or terrestrial status. This is a place to talk about running while pregnant, training, runs, races, gear, recovery, nutrition, and whatever else we can think of.

Anyone who posts here regularly should feel free to start the thread on Mondays if it seems to be missing.

How were your runs this week? Lay it on us...

GTKY: Have you ever had a injury that prevented you to run?

Re: *~* Born To Run June Bugs Check In *~*

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us and I have a broken toe! I woke up yesterday morning with no clue how it happened. ugh!

GTKY: Have you ever had a injury that prevented you to run? This is my 1st injury and I'm hoping it will heal fast! The weather is finally getting a bit warmer here for me to get outside and run in. I wore some Pumas yesterday out for errands and they really aggravated it.

  • Good morning @tonyacody06!  Ouch, sorry about the broken toe!  FX for a quick healing process!

How were your runs this week? Lay it on usHad a great week!  Was able to get out 5x!  And by get out I mean hit the treadmill.

GTKY: Have you ever had a injury that prevented you to run? No major injuries here.  I deal with a very mild case of PF that causes me to skip days here and there.  As long as I stay off it for a day or two it goes away.

Anyone planning any comeback races after baby?  I'm trying to figure out what's best for me.  I think that training for a fast 5k would be best as it's not much pressure and with the interval training it could help lose the baby weight.  There's a half marathon I'd like to do in December but I'm not sure if that would be too much pressure or not.  If so, I will wait until Spring 2015.  It's hard when you have no idea what to expect!

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us... I got 4 days in last week, for a total of 16.5 miles. Getting closer to my goal of 20 miles/week. I am coming to terms with the fact that I have to give up speed in order to run pain free, now. My hips have started becoming really sore lately and my calves are burning after every run - my friend who is a PT said she thinks my body's compensating for the extra weight and change in center of gravity, thus I'm pushing off harder/differently and causing my calf muscles to work a little harder.

GTKY: Have you ever had a injury that prevented you to run? Yes, in 2012 shortly after my first half marathon, I got a stress fracture in my left tibia as a result of overtraining (I was trying to run a second half marathon 8 weeks later and never allowed my body to rest and heal after the first one). I was benched for 4 months and it was miserable.

GTKY pt. 2: I have my eye on a November half marathon for post-baby, but I won't register until I see how my body copes with the birth and then nursing. A good friend of mine said she wasn't able to get her strength back to run distance until she finished nursing, which I'd never even considered before. If I can't do the half, there is an all-female 10-miler in October I'd like to do as a no-pressure/fun race.

  • @kinipela7 I am aiming at doing the RnR 1/2 marathon in Dec '14. We will see how fast I am able to bounce back after the baby.
  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us... I am pretty excited that I got 4 runs in, 1 outdoors!  Total of about 10.5 miles.  Hoping I get about the same this week too.  Hoping to make it to the gym at least 4 times.  I won't lift for a few more days because I had my flu shot on Friday and I don't want to bother it.

GTKY: Have you ever had a injury that prevented you to run? Knock on wood... No.  I did get a sore knee pretty often before I started running on the indoor track more regularly though.

GTKY pt. 2  Nothing planned, but I'm in Texas so I wouldn't even attempt a 5k until October at the earliest.  I really wanted to get in a 10k before getting pregnant, but I put that on hold...  Not that I couldn't, but for right now I'll stick to 5k's.

Keep up the awesome work ladies!!! and @tonyacody06 FX for your toe to heal quickly!!

  • Good morning and Happy Monday!  Hope everyone had a great weekend and @tonyacody06- so sorry to hear about your toe, ouch!  Hoping you get well soon!

How were your runs this week? Lay it on us...Last week was decent for running, I ran twice but only for 3 miles each time with some walking afterwards to be 4 and 5 miles total.  I got in 5 workouts total including some weights, and a family hike yesterday.

GTKY: Have you ever had a injury that prevented you to run?   Yes, when I was training for a half and 25k I developed runners knee.  I cut back but ran through it, then ended up having to take 3 weeks totally off.  A little ITB from time to time, and I have pes cavus (high arches that flatten) and bunions.  So I honestly don't have the best physical anatomy to be a distance runner, I only run 3 days per week and have to be really smart about increasing my mileage and pace; keeping up with strength training, stretching, etc.  I love it though.  That's why triathlons work really well for me- plenty of cross training.

  • I've fallen off the wagon with running, but wanted to let everyone know that Old Navy's activewear is 40% off. It's non-maternity, but good deals for next fall/winter!
  • @sjdihle I'm in TX too and ran all summer long - it was HOT!!! They moved the San Antonio RnR marathon from Nov to Dec next year b/c it was still too hot this year.
  • @tonyacody06  I am a northern implant (from North Dakota!), and I can't handle running outdoors when it gets above 80, so I use the track at the local college gym.  So much better!!!  Now I like running indoors because its dark when I get home from work and I'm paranoid that I'll trip and fall (I'm not what you could call graceful).
  • Today was the first time in months that I felt human again (no more m/s) so of course I had to celebrate by going for a run. It felt amazing! I didn't run nearly as far as I did before getting pregnant but I was surprised because I thought I'd be a lot more out of shape than I was.

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us...  rain rain go away!!! I'm so sick of the rain here in Atlanta! Thunderstorms most of the day Saturday, then Sunday it was nice but I had errands to run all day...then today...RAIN! Ugh! Planning to get on the treadmill tomorrow night.

GTKY: Have you ever had a injury that prevented you to run?   I got bursitis while training for the Marine Corp Marathon in 2011. I ran a half a month before it and was in horrible pain afterwards. But I got shot up with cortizone in both hips and it was awesome! Got shot up again a couple days before the race and survived in the hip area, but got tendentitus in my feet. Good grief. The bursitis stinks though because I still feel it. So sleeping on my hips all night really takes a toll on me.

Anyone planning any comeback races after baby? I hope to have a race to run, but I'm due late June and races are hard to come by here in the summer because of the heat and humidity. I have plenty of fall races though to look forward to, including the Allstate 13.1 the first weekend of October, it'll be my 4th year in a row running it. Not sure how ready I'll be, but if I have to walk most of it so be it.

  • Haven't laced up in a few months, but definitely looking to get back out there. I've been looking at 5k's sometime in autumn as I'm not sure what kind of hit my performance will take. I was never what you'd call a long distance runner.  :)

  • How were your runs this week? Lay it on us... Great! I got 2 runs in this week and even one outside on Sunday when the weather was "amazing" at 39 degrees.

    GTKY:  Nope! ::Knocks on wood::

    GTKY #2:
I have a 10 mile race I am going to do the 1st weekend of October.  I did that same race after my 1st pregnancy and my daughter's birthday is 10 days before my due date, so I don't anticipate any problems getting into shape since I had no problems thenFinding the time to make it to my run club with 2 might be more of a problem though!

  • TMI question for you guys.....

I notice that every time after I run now, my crotch area on my pants is wet.  You can see it if I'm not wearing black pants.  While I'm running, I don't feel anything come out, no stains on my underwear or anything - what is it?  Extra crotch sweat? Peeing myself and don't know it?  Anyone else get this?

  • I have it... I assumed sweat, but I guess it could be pee? Maybe discharge mixed with sweat?
  • @kinipela7 pretty sure its just sweat. i bet you would know if it was pee ;)

  • I just wonder why I don't have sweat anywhere else!?

  • @Kinipela7 I have it too! I think it is just sweat though. Like PP said, you'd feel it if you peed!

  • How were your runs this week? Pretty good, I've been getting 4-5 runs a week for 20 miles. Babies are doing well, but I keep wondering how long I'll be able to keep it up with twins! Also I've had horrible burning in my calves while running, I don't know why?! GTKY: Have you ever had a injury that prevented you to run? Yes, I had an upper femoral neck stress fracture in 2010 from overtraining, osteopenia and a Vitamin D deficiency. It was awful :(

  • @kmw722 My calves are on fire after every run, even short ones. I asked my friend who is a PT and she said it could be the change in center of gravity and/or weight gain and my legs are pushing off harder in an effort to accommodate those changes, so the muscles are working in new ways, hence the soreness. Could be the same for what you're experiencing!

  • Calves problem here too - you get used to the pain I think.  It also takes me forever to recover during pregnancy.

  • My "runs" are getting kind of sad, like someone could probably walk briskly alongside of me! I am lucky to get in 1-2 runs/week, 2-3 miles each.
No major prior injuries that stopped my running, just mild knee pain here and there. My calves are killing me! When I run, my legs feel like lead and my calves burn so badly, even on level ground. I am registered for a 5k in March, when I will be 26-27 weeks I believe. I had planned to run it; now we shall see if I'm walking!
Any tips for the calves, other than stretching before/after?
And, yup, the sweaty crotch happens! lol
  • Did anyone do a remembrance run for Meg's Miles today? I missed my running group's run so I did a solo run in her honor.

  • @nicolinab I think I flagged your comment by accident! Damn mobile bumping. Sorry!!

  • @babygabe614 what is that? Never heard of it...
  • @sjdihle Here's a link to the fb event from today: https://m.facebook.com/events/489458451159627?__user=5517412

She was an avid runner and Boston marathoner who was struck and killed by a drunk driver while out on a run this week. :( Such a sad story.

    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

  • @babygabe614 Oh wow! So sad! I'm getting so paranoid about where/when I run, I guess for good reason!
  • @sjdihle As you should be. I think it's easy for us as runners to be distracted or feel "too safe" sometimes. Unfortunately, it's events like this that remind us to be vigilant about being aware of our surroundings at ALL times (running, driving, or otherwise). A woman in my area was also struck and killed by a driver a couple months ago (an 18 year old kid was texting while driving and crossed into the opposite lane and hit and killed her) and it was just so saddening and unfair, for both the victim and her family, and the kid who has to live with that guilt for the rest of his life. You truly can never be too careful.

  • @babygabe614 I rarely run outdoors anymore, and hardly ever without DH, never after dark anymore. My rational was that i didn't want to fall and hurt the little one, but this definitely hits home! I just took defensive driving to take care of a ticket, what an eye opener! I'm terrified of other drivers now, and have definitely become more aware of my distraction habits! Thanks for posting about this!
  • @babygabe614 - I did some miles for Meg!  I went to the gym and ran for 20 minutes, but wasn't feeling that well doing it so I had to finish the rest of the miles on the elliptical/bike.

I run outside when it's warm enough but never ever run in the street.  Luckily for me, I live 1 mile away from a paved trail that is 40 miles long!
