Testing done earlier than normal?

FTM, so maybe this is totally normal...
My OB had my blood drawn for a quad screen today. I've read that they are done at 16-18 weeks, I'm 15wks3d. He had me schedule my A/S for when I will be 19wks, and I've always heard those were for 20-22 weeks. Has anyone else had tests done earlier than "normal"?
My OB also told me that I would not be allowed to go past 39wks (which is a blessing due to insurance reasons), but I don't see why that would have anything effect on when I do the quad or a/s. Any input is appreciated :)

  • My anatomy scan is at 18 weeks, I think it was the same with DS. I think for most of the tests/screenings there is a 2-3 week window of when they can be done.
Why won'y she let you go past 39 weeks? Is there a medical reason? My practice won't talk induction until 41 weeks.
  • My doctor and all my friends have had their a/s done between 16-20 weeks, so 19 weeks doesn't sound off to me. Not sure what a quad test is, the only blood work I had done was the initial one after my first appointment then GD is done at some point, like 20 some odd weeks. Haven't schedule my a/s for this one yet, but the doc mentioned that it would be around 18 or 19 weeks.

  • My a/s's were both done at 18 and 19 weeks I believe. Totally normal. What is your OB's reasoning as to taking baby by 39 weeks? My OB said I could only go 10 days over last time, but this time they'll be out by 38 weeks b/c it's twins though.

  • I would be more concerned with the fact that your OB "won't let you" go past 39 weeks.

  • Tests are best done when suggested. I would investigate when that would be for the quad and what it could mean for your results if your OB is doing it outside of the suggested window. Some are much more important to have during specific dates than others. I wouldn't worry about an anatomy scan at 19 weeks, that really depends on the tech and equipment being used, so ideal images can vary from office to office.

But seriously, not going past 39 weeks may be a blessing for insurance but induction is not a blessing unless truly medically indicated. This would be enough for me to change OBs.

Yes, because I was diabetic pre-pregnancy and my BP is borderline hypertension.

Ah, makes more sense. Sorry for the knee-jerk reaction. With a healthy pregnancy where you keep your numbers down and no additional hypertension issues, will he still insist?

  • I had my quad at 13 weeks. My AS always been done at 18 weeks.
  • I had my AFP blood test (tests for abnormalities) at 14 weeks 6 days and the results came back showing the test was performed too early. Guess it all depends on the person.
  • My a/s is scheduled for 18 weeks this time. I was at the end of 17 weeks with my first 2. I had GD with both pregnancies and delivered via induction at 39 weeks each time. I foresee this happening again

    1st pregnancy: m/c began 1/12/09 d&c 1/13/09 8wks. Baby stopped growing at about 6wks.

    Delaney: Born 10/15/09

    Gavin: Born 4/8/11

    Baby #3: due July 10, 2014

  • My AS with DD was done at 18 weeks. This one will probably be 20, unless he has me back in the office 2 weeks later for the scan (my next appt is 16 weeks)

I'm not sure if he will or not. I know it is still early, but my endo has yet to have to increase my original insulin dosage and is happy with my numbers. I'm hoping to keep my numbers down with diet and exercise. I'll ask my OB about it next time I go in... Oh! I can also get my endo's opinion when I see her today :D

This!  At 39 weeks you may not be 'ready' to labor and end up having a c-section for failure to progress.  I would really rethink your choice of OBs.... You should labor when your baby is ready not when the OB says so.
