Using forks?

Is anyone else's LO using forks yet? Ava suddenly started on her own, I guess from watching us. I would bring one of her kiddie plastic forks to help feed her and she grabbed it and started feeding herself!
The problem is that the kiddie forks we have do not work well as a fork. She gets super frustrated cause she can't get much on the prongs but I don't feel comfortable giving her one of our full size ones.

If your LO is using forks and spoons, what kind are you having success with?

Re: Using forks?

  • We have some of DH's utensils from when he was a baby. They are exactly like adult utensils, just scaled down. We also have the ones with slightly rounded tips and fat handles from target. She's pretty good with them. The only thing I have to watch is when she's tired she tries to rub her eyes while holding them.

  • Elissa usually just uses a regular fork.  It's a bit too big, but she's getting better with it.

These are the forks L is using. He does a lot better with these than the plastic ones. They are cheaper at target.

We also use the Gerber/Nuk silverware. He does great with them, esp now that he's getting bothered by dirty hands.

  • Pearson uses the small regular forks. If I try a plastic one he won't eat unless I give him mine. Plus the real ones work so much better!

  • I gave up on the kid forks with DD#1. My girls use salad forks and I supervise DD#2 very closely. She has never poked herself with it and does pretty good getting her food on it. She has more trouble with a spoon because she tends to tip it on the way to her mouth and all the food falls off. We have plastic spoons from wal mart that are pretty deep and easy for toddlers to use. She gets the best spoon practice with thick foods like mashed potatoes or thicker yogurt.

  • Thanks everyone. Even our smallest forks are still too big for her. So I will make a trip to target today to see if they have those gerber ones :)
  • We use this Oxo Tot fork and spoon set from Amazon. I like that they are metal but have rounded edges and plastic handle. They've worked better than all plastic ones. Emma has gotten really good at using them but Liam still prefers to use his hands most times.
  • Emery uses a fork at every meal. She prefers the adult fork. She does well with it!

  • I just had to buy a set of toddler forks with metal prongs; I got a 3 pack at Target for $4. She was getting really frustrated with the plastic toddler forks but our everyday silverware is too heavy/long for her to use well.

  • K has trouble getting the food to stay on the prongs of his kiddie fork as well. But since he is still prone to going into what we call "serial killer mode" at meal time and flailing his utensils around like a lunatic, I won't be giving him a real fork for a while so he will just have to deal.

  • We bought a set from IKEA that we use at home.  We've been giving her a fork for months but she just started getting the right stabbing motion within the last two or three weeks. She's still a maniac with a spoon.  She uses a real fork when we're out and about.
