Office chair..

My back is already starting to hurt and work is too cheap to buy me a new chair so I'm going to buy my own..anyone have any recommendations for good office chairs with lumbar support? Reasonably priced please!

Re: Office chair..

  • I have no advice, but I just asked my office for the same thing last week and was told I'd have to go through HR Benefits to request something.  You'd think that this comes up all the time in the workplace and they'd have some alternative for the pregnant ladies.  Good luck on your quest!

Wow! That's crazy. I figured when I leave there I'll just take it with me…I don't really have the energy or patience right now to fight with them. Good luck to you too! Thanks :)

  • Kinipela7 Have you ever done that?  I thought about doing that because I've heard it's good pregnant or not.  I'd just be afraid that I'd bounce off of it multiple times a day lol

  • I second the exercise ball! I used one as my desk chair during my last trimester (last pregnancy) and it was great. I guess try one out first to see if it works for you. You get the right size so your feet touch the ground and you don't roll off.
  • Try the exercise ball! I just got one at Target (on sale) and it has helped my back so much.

  • Why get an all new chair? Just get a lumbar support pillow. You can find them for $15-$50.

  • i feel you I am 18 weeks and my back was bothering me last week big time by the end of the day.  I am a teacher sit and stand all day. I have a nice wood chair and all the kids sit on wood chairs so non of them are comfy.  I have a chair pillow but it is so thin now I think I need a new one. Would love to have a nice chair!!!

  • Yoga Ball
  • I did the ball last pregnancy and realized it wasn't supporting my arms and wasn't high enough for my desk…the lumbar supports added to the chair could be a good short term solution..

  • My cousin recommended a steel case chair but they are pricey..he was able to find one on craigslist for $300 but that's a lot and I'd be so upset if someone stole it!

  • I'd fight that. Do you have an ergo or HR dept? Can you have your doctor write you a note?

It's silly for them not to spend the $100 on a new chair when you could potentially file a workers' compensation claim and they could potentially spend much more than that on you!

Yes, I've had one for awhile now because my posture kind of sucks when sitting in a normal chair.  It makes you have good posture which helps a ton.  It took me a few days to get used to it but I swear by it!

  • I agree with @katekat8721, I'd fight it. You should get a note from your OB and request the chair as a "reasonable accommodation."

  • We do have an HR dept but it would be up to my boss and she's let's say a tightwad. She won't even pay for trainings for me to go to that directly relate to my position. Needless to say, I'll be looking for something else after the baby gets here.

  • A good office chair (designed for commercial office use) will run anywhere from $400-$1000. Sometimes you can find decent ones at staples or even Costco for around $200 that might help on the short term, but they don't last very long.
