ENT WWJ12D....

Camden has had at least 10 sinus infection and 5 ear infections in the past 6 months. He currently takes 1 chewable singular in the morning and gets 5 mls of Zyrtec at night for the past 2 months before that it was just the Zyrtec.

We were referred to an ENT 2 weeks ago and went. The ENT says that he has "cookie and milk disease" which is something that she came up with and has written books on. Basically the reason he is getting infections is because he eats or drinks before bed (he gets an 8 oz bottle and a snack). According to her it causes acid reflux and is causing all of the mucous.

He snores like a bear which tells me adenoids and she said that we should stop all food and drink including water after 630 (bedtime is 730-8). My problem is he wakes up starving in the middle of the night! She also said that he really doesn't need dairy and can go 3 months without it! I realize Camden is a pretty big kid but he is only 17 months old! Pediatrician was pissed and is willing to refer us somewhere else.

What would you do? Keep trying to not let him eat or drink or get a second opinion? I am leaning towards second opinion because I refuse to starve my kid and I really think she was a quack but that's just my opinion.

Re: ENT WWJ12D....

  • I would ask for a 2nd opinion. Him having milk before bed I wouldn't think would cause all of those issues. I would not trust an ENT who blew off my concerns so quickly. If pedi is pissed that would be a huge red flag, go with your gut mama

  • Go to a different ent.

  • My pediatricians words were "well of I invented a new disease I would diagnose all of my patients with it to so it wold sound legit". Seriously she is this 5' nothing Indian woman and I love her to death and she is always so sweet, I almost fell over when she said it!

We have tried moving snack time to 645 and 7 because the ENT was really strict about not wanting him to eat or drink but he will wake up at 330-4 screaming for food. He usually sleeps from 730-8 until 9-930 so I really don't want to screw with that!

Thanks ladies I was really put off by her ignoring the amount of infections and the snoring because Cortlandt's ENT (who is 3 hours away otherwise I would see him again) said those were big flags with Cortlandt and removed his adenoids and he has only had a handful of colds since then and they never got really bad. You guys confirmed what I was thinking and we will be seeking a second opinion. Poor kid is sick again which is what brought it up :(
  • We tried hijoi but he would still wake up hungry, we have tried to take the bottle (he gets 2 a day) but he is as stubborn as a mule and will not drink milk out of anything else. We have bought 10 different sippys and even tried a regular cup. He went a week without milk and his pedi told us to just go back to the bottle. He doesn't really care for yogurt and cheese so he wasn't taking in enough dairy.
  • I would get a second opinion. Also, if for whatever reason Tumaini doesn't eat her before bedtime snack, she'll wake up at four o'clock insisting on food. I would try a dairy free snack, but I wouldn't remove the snack.

I would get a second opinion. It sounds like that is the go to diagnosis for that ENT. Maybe she is just trying to sell books. Does she even have (peer reviewed) research to back up her thoughts, or is it merely a theory? Go to a different ENT and see what they have to say.
I agree. It sounds like she wants to make her idea legit and is diagnosing kids for her benefit. I would get a second opinion. Something is going on but I would highly doubt it was solely due to milk before bed. It sounds like your pedi also thinks this advice is crap, which just goes to prove that you should see someone else.
  • Yeah, I vote for second opinion too. I never heard of such desease. However I did hear that dairy can make ear infections worse, so I would try to switch to soy milk or almond milk and see if it would make any differrence. My friend's daughter was having a lot of ent issues and they switched to soy milk and my friend swears that it was a miracle cure for her. Idk, but worse a try...

  • We were going to try soy milk but I am highly allergic to soy and nuts so it makes it hard to have soy or almond milk in the house. We may try it just to see I just won't be able to touch it or kiss him after :(
  • Almond milk maybe? Dairy does cause a lot of mucous and "allergy" type response. My ENT said at this age most allergies in children are more dietary than environmental. And there is a lot of evidence that reflux can cause the stomach contents to go into the eustacian tubes. But definitely get a second opinion if you don't jive well with her :)

  • Yogurt is a good dairy source and the least allergenic source of dairy. The proteins are partially broken down when yogurt is made, so the allergy response is lessened. There is nothing special about cows milk. It's just a convenient source of fat, calcium and protein. You can make up for a lack of milk with other foods

  • Thanks @deniseRN :) it's actually me who is highly allergic to legumes (soy) and tree nuts so it's hard for me to give it to him because any contact causes me a very bad reaction. He doesn't care for yogurt and cheese and will only eat it on occasion.

After dealing with Jace's acid reflux I am not really sure Camden has those issues but maybe he has silent reflux? He doesn't show any signs of discomfort while sleeping and has never been a spitter after drinking milk.

I think I am going to try the soy milk and see if it makes a difference before making another appointment I am just going to have to be super careful about contact with it.
