Cloth Diapering

Absorbency Issue?

My 7 week old has recently peed through a GMD yellow that he wore for 4 hours I think at night, and a RaR microfiber insert in his pocket he was in today for 3 hours (I think it's the 6r, but it's the big one not the little one that comes with them).  Oh, and I noticed this leaked when I was nursing, so it could have been a compression leak.

1. Is this normal for his age?
2. The insert and prefold were saturated.  That means that it's an absorbency issue, not a repelling issue, correct?
3. Recommend your inserts!  I think if I add the other microfiber insert right now it would be super bulky for him, even though he's a chub.
4. Until I can order and receive said new inserts, which will work best to stuff my pocket with?  I have GMD small flats, GMD orange and yellow, all the inserts from 6 RaR pockets, and I was thinking about getting some flour sack towels from Walmart to use as flats.  I'm not really sure what has the best absorbency though.

Re: Absorbency Issue?

  • Yes it's an absorbency issue. Was he sleeping for three hours? You should be changing at least every two right now if he's awake.

1.)  Yes, he's a bit on the heavy wetter side, but G was peeing through a BG 4.0 larger MF insert by around 12-14 weeks.

2.) Yes, definitely absorbency issue.  As you said, the RaR could have been compression, but the solution is still more absorbency.

3.) Love, love love my AppleCheeks bamboo 2-ply.  Super trim.  Hold a ton.  Mine still look close to new & we've been heavily using them for over a year now.

4.) The flats or the GMD prefolds will both work great.  Absorbency wise the flat and the yellow edge will probably be about the same, the orange edeg a bit less.   The flat might be a bit trimmer than prefolds.  Use an orange edge prefold if you are on the smallest rise setting and a yellow edge if you are on the middle rise setting.

FWIW I think the RaR MF soakers hold less than the BG MF inserts.  Not by much but still.  Also, for nighttime you could do a yellow GMD with a flat or a NB prefold tri-folded as a doubler.

He was sleeping and then I nursed before I changed him since he tends to poop when he eats.  Maybe I should have changed him before and after though.  That does sound like a long time.

Do you know how the RaR MF compare to flats?  I would love to just get more flats since they are more versatile and cheap to supplement some bamboo.
  • I haven't done a scientific test like @littkek did a while back, but I will say I use both the NB and regular MF 6R insert with G and need to change him after around 1.5 hours or he'll leak.  I can padfold a GMD flat and stuff a pocket and he can easily go 3-3.5 hours during nap time with no leaks.  The nice thing about using flats is they aren't prone to compression leaks like MF.

  • We use GMD prefolds during the day, and BG 4.0 pockets at night. We've done this for over 2 years without anything more than the occasional leak. I'd recommend it for nighttime diapering.

To stuff the pockets I use a combination of the big BG microfiber liner, with Thirsties hemp/cotton inserts (they're thin). We've gone through 4 different combo stages to stuff our BGs:
    1. BG big microfiber only (folded down, of course)
    2. BG big microfiber with small Thirsties hemp behind
    3. BG big microfiber with large Thirsties hemp behind
    4. BG big microfiber with both small and large Thirsties hemp offset behind.

I own 8 sets of each. It's worked very well for 2+ years. Good luck!

  • CLLDLL.  Here is what I found for the different inserts.  The first number is from them hanging until they stopped dripping (saturated) and the second number is after light compression.

    GMD small prefold 1.2/1 cups
    Osocozy flat 1/0.8 cups
    Joey Bunz hemp 0.7/0.5 cups
    Alva/Kawaii bamboo 0.7/0.5 cups
    BG large insert 1.1/.7 cups
    BG newborn 0.6/0.3 cups
    Flip stay-dry 1.2/0.8 cups
    Rumparooz 6r 1.7/1.3 cups

The small prefold does hold slightly more than the flat, but the flat is quite a bit trimmer.  We use the prefold in a BG for naps and the flat in a BG for out of the house.  The only MF we use are Flips in the diaper bag.
