Vaccinations for Adults Around Newborns

I saw the other post today about the pertussis vaccine and how important it is to have if you're going to be around newborns, and it got me thinking....Are there any other vaccines that you would want or require those who will be around your baby in the early days to have (obviously things that baby is still too young to get vaccinated for)?  My first thought was flu, but that might not be as much of a concern since our babies will be newborns over the summer.  Maybe there aren't any, I admittedly have no idea at this point.

    Booster?

Edit- I know you're supposed to get that when you're 11/12 but i mean, just be safe everyone has gotten it? Idk.

  • Flu for sure. Flu season peaks in the winter but it doesn't mean you can't catch it in the summer

  • From what I understand, the pertussis vaccine (given as TDaP, most adults who see their dr regularly receive a booster every 8-10 years) and the flu vaccine are the two most common vaccines that are recommended for adults working with young children.

I don't think anyone can demand or force people to get vaccinations of any kind. So, I will just be diligent about not having people hold baby, and for a lot of hand sanitizer. The only people that NEED to have their boosters are my DH and me, and my parents who will babysit a lot. And the only one will be pertussis.

  • DH and I are going to get our boosters on my OB's recommendation, but we won't insist anything on anyone else... Our church community is very important to us and I can't really see asking our friends and church family if they've been vaccinated before they're allowed to see or even hold our little one.

  • I agree with you ladies that I can't force someone to get vaccinations, that wasn't really my question, though.  It's more which vaccines 'should' people, adults and children, who want to interact with a newborn have?  It's more about people who will be around baby all the time and help with care like me, DH, our parents, our siblings and my nephew, who will be babysat with our baby twice a week.
