New EP--can you help?

My daughter is two weeks old and I have decided to EP.  I pump every three hours with one five hour stretch at night.

I have an issue and I'm hoping that someone can help.I can pump for 30+ minutes and still produce milk.  I was under the impression that you should pump for 15-20 minutes.  But, if I pump for 20 minutes, my breasts are still really full.  How long should I pump? (please say 20 minutes--spending 4 hours of my day pumping is rough) :)  I am currently pumping about 36-40 oz/day and my daughter only eats about 25 oz.  Can I start to space out the pumping sessions to reduce my supply?

Thanks for your help!

Re: New EP--can you help?

  • We're very similar. I try to pump for just 20 minutes unless I'm really full. I'm pumping for twins so I need to pump around 50oz a day. I get about 10-12oz a pump. I pump only about 5x a day and freeze around 12-24oz a day.

Since I do have twins and a 3year old, I just try to pump when I can.

I think since you produce so much you could space your pumping further apart to have some more time.

You will still feel full until your body adjusts to making slightly less milk. It may take a couple days, but you should begin to feel less full after pumping for shorter amounts of time.

  • Thanks ladies. I started pumping for less time last night and already feeling so much better. I really appreciate your guidance.
