BLWers Food Throwing

So 90-95% of J's breakfast is on the floor (well, probably 40% is in the pooch's belly). She dumped homemade oatmeal, oranges, and banana slices - all stuff she really likes. Plus a homemade clean eating banana and oatmeal "cookie", which she hasn't tried.

I caved and gave her some Cheerios, which she is eating.

What do you all do for food dumping? Offer more of a different food? Assume LO isn't hungry?

J is 12.5 mo. She typically likes breakfast. I'm still BFing on demand, so she isn't going to starve. Our usual food throwing is more in the 30-40% range.

Re: BLWers Food Throwing

  • For us I find it mostly means she is done eating. Even if we just started. Sometimes it means she doesn't like it, for that day lol. We mostly get head shakes and tight lips for dislike right now.

  • I take it away. If she hasn't eaten much, we try again later. If he has eaten some, we assume she is done. And of course remind her that throwing food is not acceptable. And explain that's why I'm taking it away. "We don't throw our food on the floor. You must be all done eating."

  • Ditto PP - G isn't a picky eater, so it's usually happening b/c she is full. If she hasn't eaten a lot we take a break and try again 20-30 minutes later (if we have the time). If we are on the go, I just pack a container of "snacks" - cheerios, puffs, blueberries, etc.

Also, I remember you saying that you guys have a dog. We do too... G thinks it's funny to "feed" Mona (our wheaten terrier pup), so maybe J gets a kick out of watching the dog clean it up? So annoying  /:)

  • Welcome to my (previous) world.  M was the ultimate food-thrower for the longest time.  At first, he would only throw when he was getting full.  Then he started throwing at the start of the meal, esp if it's something he *thinks* he doesn't want to eat - could be a new food (doesn't want to try new stuff), or an old food (perhaps he remembers he didn't like it last time).  Or it could be because I put too much and he needs to "clear" his tray.  Some days he throws most of the food on the floor first, then proceed to eat the rest of it.

We've been through various incarnations of this for months.  Things have gotten MUCH better now - since we started using plates for M.  Also, I try to put only 1-2 bites of each food on his plate, so as to NOT overwhelm him. IF it's something he likes, I'll put more when he finishes what's on his plate (or he'll sign more).  If there is a food he doesn't like or doesn't want to try, he'll either take it out of his plate and put it on his tray, or he hands it back to us (I let him put the food on my plate).  So basically, instead of him throwing foods off his tray onto the floor, he now as the option of "removing" foods off his plate onto the tray.

Can't tell you how much happier both DH & I are these days!

  • Thanks, everyone!

@pb_bride, I love that M is doing much better. I like the idea of smaller amounts.

I have no idea why J is throwing food. Half the time our lazy pooch won't get off the ouch, so that isnt totally the case. If J has a spoon, the dog won't even come in the room.

We tried the please stop throwing food request tonight. Haha! Not a chance. It is almost like she would rather eat the discarded food off the floor while I'm trying to finish my meal. Sigh. We'll keep working on it. Thanks or the ideas.

  • I am of the theory that anything annoying is probably just a phase and it will eventually pass.

As a note, at one year, I don't think there should be anything different between BLWers and others. All kids should be eating normal foods- non purees at this point.

  • Agh the throwing phase. It will come and go. My DS is 2 1/2 and still does it. More because he is all done or isnt hungry or sometimes just to experiment. We have tried everything. Now we just have him pick up what he threw which helps me to be less irritated. Lol

  • Another thought pertaining to breakfast food-throwing... Do you nurse J as soon as she wakes up?  And how long after do you feed her breakfast?

I still nurse M when he wakes up, and I find that I have to wait an hour (1 hr from end of nursing session) before he is remotely hungry to eat breakfast.  If I offer him b'fast sooner, he usually won't eat anything.

  • Personally I think it's a stage. Once I see DS start throwing..I know he is done eating. If he starts throwing or squishing his food it's usually a sign for us he is done or doesn't like. I feel now DS is old enough to eat what we eat but when he was still a year that was a tough call. IF he really didn't like the food I would offer something else just to have a full belly because I don't feel at that age I could tell him that is what your eating or no desert kind of thing.

I do still nurse J. However, this morning I was teaching at the gym so she had her last boob at 5:30. DH waited until I got home, around 6:45 for me to do something about breakfast.

However, that is a good thought since I usually nurse her before we get up so that I can collect my marbles before I hit the ground running.

This morning J enjoyed smearing yogurt everywhere. I did have less to clean us since we didn't put as much on her tray.
