Bleeding diaper rash...help!

Anyone have any suggestions for diaper rash that is bleeding right around the rectum? I am EBF and baby is almost three weeks old. The redness started about 3 days ago and I just noticed the bleeding today.

I'm trying not to freak out and can't get ahold of pediatrician until tomorrow morning.

  • Definitely talk to your pedi. It sounds like a yeast infection, most likely thrush.

  • Good advice on previous post,( use damp cotton balls no wipes and aquafor)...
my baby had a bad rash with what the doctor referred to as 'broken skin' meaning it was almost like an open sore where her cheeks touched. Pedi said it was from the natural acids that are found in breast milk, I also EBF.

Got a prescription cream and now much better. Hope that helps. Was a bit pricey.
  • Sounds like a yeast rash.  Everything PP said is great advice until you can get a Rx cream.

  • Thanks ladies!!
  • A&D works wonders!
  • My EBF babe was going through 16 poo diapers a day at 3w and he ended up with a couple small "open wounds". I was already doing Aquaphor and other barrier creams, so what helped him was soaking his bum in warm water for a bit followed by a long naked time. It cleared it up each time! BTW - At 6w my EBF babe started "consolidating" poops so we're diaper rash free now! (but at high blowout risk)

  • Bleeding def means something more than just a rash, when I was working with toddlers one of them had that, it was rectal strep. He needed a prescription cream, and more frequent changes!

My LO struggled with this for seemingly ever. He is EBF and would poop constantly. It was almost impossible to keep his bottom clean. The area right around his rectum became very irritated. The pedi saw it and recommended vaseline. Well, a week of just vaseline and it was bleeding. I tried everything from making my own wipes, mylanta, coconut oil and every diaper cream on the market. The miracle fix for me ended up being aquaphor and I began using it at every diaper change. 2 days and his bottom went from broken and bloody to completely healed. It felt like a miracle. Of course, I think it also helps to pat their bottom dry and give them as much naked bottom time as possible. I ended up discovering that Pampers Swaddlers irritated him and Pampers sensitive wipes worked the best. If you're worried about wipes irritating though, you can only use plain water and just pat dry. Fortunately, around 10 weeks old DS stopped pooping so often. He is still EBF but now only poops every couple days. I don't need to apply aquaphor at every diaper change anymore. I hope your able to get your LO cleared up.

  • Thanks so much for the feedback! Things are looking much less red these days, with a combo of maalox, desitin, and aquaphor.

Thanks for helping keep me sane!!
  • My LO had the same problem. I tried many things and what worked for me was a cream called resinol. It started clearing up the same day I started using it. Also, I used warm water and a washcloth when I changed him. Then I would blow dry his bottom to get it dry. It was a process but it worked and he loved the blow dryer on his bottom!
