lunch ideas for picky eater?

My 2 year old son does not like many of the things other kids do so I'm having trouble finding things he will eat for lunch. He does not like watermelon, strawberries (or anything strawberry flavored), grapes, cheese (most of the time), lunchmeat, and oranges. He's burnt out on peanut butter, eggs, and bananas. What do you all give your toddlers for lunch?

  • And I forgot to mention he doesn't like salad.

  • Will he eat any veges?  Our girls don't like most but they will sometimes eat broccoli and carrots.  Does he like yogurt?  That is one of their favorites--I usually buy a 32 oz vanilla container (lower sugar variety) and send in a cup with the girls.  Apples and applesauce are also our girls' favorites.  Pasta with marinara sauce or mac n cheese they'll usually eat.

  • Mine is hit or miss on foods.  Some days he likes them, some days he doesn't.  He also has a problem of not eating his lunch because he's too busy talking to friends.  But this an idea of our lunch menu for the week:
    * Baked tofu and broccoli with, apple slices, raisins and dried cranberries.
    * Tortilla wrap with yogurt dip, tomatoes and carrots, steamed cauliflower, apple and orange slices, raisins
    * Chili, peas and corn with rice, dried cranberries, apple slices
    * Fried rice, banana and apple slices, dried cherries, crackers with soy butter (his friend is allergic to sunflower seeds and nuts, otherwise I'd send peanut butter/nut butter/sunbutter)

  • I second the soup. My daughter loves almost any type of soup I give her. She also loves chili.

  • Adding to the ideas of other posters: quesadillas, mac and cheese, stuffed baked potatoes.
  • Thanks for the ideas everyone. He does like yogurt, spaghetti, and mac & cheese. He doesn't like soup though.

  • I've been letting my picky eater "help" me make the meals.  Whether it is letting her spread a little bit of peanut butter on a banana for a snack or dumping cut up carrots into a soup.  I just started letting her do this and it is already making a bit of a difference in her eating.  She tends to be more willing to try new things if she was involved in making it.  My little one loves soup now.  I make up a soup and chop veggies in my food processor so they are tiny.  That way my LO can't pick out the lumps she doesn't want to eat.   Good luck!
