I hate Dr Google

I'm at work today & H took A for her four month appointment. The doctor told him to start giving her 4-8 oz of water a day in addition to her breast milk.

Ordinarily I wouldn't question what our doctor told us, but Dr Google tells me very different things about giving water to a four month old.

Thoughts? I'm trying to figure out what I should call and ask the pedi about it.

Re: I hate Dr Google

  • Water is old school thinking. Babies get all they need from breastmilk/formula. My mom keeps asking if I'm giving DD water, but she last had a baby 36 years ago ;)

  • no. no. no. The only thing water will do it fill LO up when they should be drinking formula/ breastmilk for nutrients. Offering in a sippy cup to practice drinking out of is one thing but even then, bm/ formula is fine too.
  • Is it hot where you live? It's only recommend by my doctor at this age if it's very warm out and child is at risk of dehydration.

    Yes, it's very hot here

  • That seems like a lot of water, but I guess it makes sense if dehydration could be a concern. Definitely call for clarification and you can add that you have researched it and see conflicting info. Maybe he can tell you more about why he believes this is the right way to go.

  • I just looked at the cheat sheet my doctor gave me at DS 4 month. It says it is OK to give a small amount of water 4/6 oz during hot summer months as long as they continue to drink the appropriate amount of formula/ breast milk for their weight. My doctor also will provide references if you have questions about their recommendations, maybe you could call yours and ask if they can do the same.

Our doctor is really good about that. I'll try that route. Thanks.

  • We also live in the southeast and my doctor recommended giving him some water each day. Dehydration risks are the main reason but she also thinks it helps them develop a taste for it so they won't drink as much juice later. I was concerned because I had heard it was easier to aspirate on. My friend, who is an occupational therapist, recommended giving it to him using baby spoons. So he gets a couple of drops at a time and he gets to play with the spoon while working on fine motor and feeding skills.
  • CDC and WHO both say exclusively breastfed babies do not need water, even in extreme heat environments.

  • we didn't start water until she started solids and we just offered a straw cup with meals. We never monitored the amount. I see absolutely no reason for water while still on milk/formula.
  • If A is still outputting the normal number of wet dipes I wouldn't. If her pee is darker yellow than normal and she is not peeing as often, I would reconsider.
