Sick

Poor LO is sick and its just killing me. His cough is so strong and mucousy that he cries every time. He has a fever of 101.7. His poor little eyes are telling me that he's hurting. And there's nothing I can do. As of the past few hours he's been sleepng on me and screams every time I try to put him down. It's gonna be a looong night. Anyone dealing with a first time cold in LO?

Re: Sick

  • Have you called the doctor? I think with a fever that high, most doctors want you to call. Hope he feels better soon!

  • My doc said 102. The last time he spiked a fever after shots it was this high and they told me to call only after 102. Maybe I should call anyways? At least ill feel like I'm doing something

  • Hope he feels better! Did you try Tylenol? It might give him some relief and bring his fever down. Breaks my heart when kids are sick.
  • I would try infant Tylenol to break the fever if you're comfortable with it. That might help your LO feel a little better?

  • The fever AND cough together make me nervous.  I would call.  Let us know how he does!
  • :( LO has croup it's awful!! It's been a long day and I'm sure the night will be worse. I feel so terrible seeing him miserable and not being able to make him better.. I hope your LO feels better soon
  • I think 102 for shots fever is different from regular fever. LO was congested for a week but no fever so I didn't bother with a doc trip but when they get a fever to me that's a sign of fighting infection. He did get a fever (only 100) and I took him in and he has a sinus infection. We are on the mend but the meds are giving him diarrhea so that's fun.
  • So his fever seems to be going down. I'm taking it hourly - it was 101 and then 100.8. Still high. I think I'll try the Tykenol and see if we break it. AAP recommends calling over 103 (Since he's 6months). If its not broken by am ill call.

@sftbllstr87 - croup is one of my big fears. My niece used to get it and it was so scary!

  • One of the babies has croup. It started Thurs night and was really bad overnight. H was home w them on Fri and took him in and he got a breathing treatment and steroids. If it didn't improve, we would've had to go to the hospital. Luckily, he improved and is doing much better today.

The other one (and the big one for that matter) didnt get it. This is the second time he's had croup. I'm hoping it doesn't become chronic.

  • Man, I'm sorry. I hate when they are sick. My second daughter had RSV at 6 months. Nebulizer, inhaler, and hospital stay. It is very scary. I would call the doctor

  • A sick baby is rough. Joel had a TERRIBLE cold a few weeks ago. The funny thing is that I felt worse about him being sick than he did :/. It didn't seem to bother him much at all, but that cough was ferocious.
    Married DH <3 : 7/7/12; 3 fur babies (2 dogs and 1 cat)
DS born 9/3/13; DD born 7/22/15; LO due 5/28/18
FS (age 5) and FD (age 2) to become AS/AD very soon!

  • @carrotcake06 what made you bring him in? Any particular reason or just bc it's so scary?
It's times like these I wish I didn't work so LO didn't have to go to daycare and catch germs! At least he's building antibodies for the future :/
  • We haven't dealt with any colds yet so I dot have any experience with that. I just wanted to say I hope your LO feels better. Sucks to be sick!

  • LO had her first cold when she was 4 weeks old. We did the whole elevation to sleep, humidifier, warm bath before bed, nose frida and lots of love approach. We did take her to the doctor once she started to spike a fever and his recommendation was to give her half a dose of tylenol (since she was so young). She began to feel better after a few days.

I would call your pedi if the fever continues. Definitely give the tylenol a try. I hope he feels better soon. It's no fun when they aren't feeling well. You want to take it away and you can't. :(

  • We're dealing with LO's first ear infection and congestion. It breaks my heart when he screams and grabs his ears!! His cough sounds so bad and then he screams after coughing too!! Hope all of your little ones feel better soon!!!
  • Yeah my LO got my sinus infection. No fever(thank god), just a ton of drippage and a cough..We are finally on the tail end of it though...I hated seeing her so sick

  • Ugh, I hope he feels better soon. Babies being sick is definitely hard. I've been through it with DS, and LO has been sick already as well. If you are comfortable with giving Tylenol.. Do it. A nice bath is always good too. Like pp's have said, call your doc if the fever gets worse. LOTS of cuddles. Best of luck :)

  • This is us the past few nights and it's awful! I'm sorry you're going through it as well! I'm hoping it passes soon for us both.

We've done lots of baby vick's, humidifier, Tylenol, and extra snuggles!

Good luck! Hope your LO feels better soon!!

  • @sftbllstr87 it was bad - every single breath was a wheeze and then the barking seal cough. He slept on me for part of the night and you could just hear him struggling. H took him in, but apparently when they got to the dr and they heard it, he went right back for the breathing treatment.

He's also a preemie, so I know they're more cautious w respiratory stuff. Luckily, his o2 sats were really good.

Look up stridor and croup. If their chest goes concave and they struggle to breathe, lips turn blue, etc take them in. You can run a warm mist (like a shower) or take them outside in the cold.

    Croup sucks.

  • We did end up speaking with the doctor last night. LO was crying so hard and for so long, and it sounded like the mucus was in his lungs. Doc said probably not in his lungs and gave me all the warning signs to look for (labored breathing, skin sucking inbetween ribs, etc.) So I felt like we were OK to stay home over night but we're going in this morning. While I havent taken his temp again this morning he feels warmer and frankly I just need the reassurance that its nothing too serious.
I had no idea that when kids get sick they scream for hours on end. Call me a naive FTM but holy crap that is some serious sh*t. Both DH and I are stunned at how intense last night was. LO slept on me the whole time but really we spent most of hte time on the bouncy ball because that was the only thing keeping him quiet. I'm glad I called.

  • Just got home about an hr ago from the dr.  She is 99% sure that LO has RSV and he is on a nebulizer with instructions that if he gets worse to head to the ER.  I hope your LO feels better soon! It is heartbreaking seeing them sick and knowing there is nothing else you can do for them. :(

  • She got a head cold at a month. It was so sad looking at her snotty nose and watery eyes. Thankfully we didn't have to deal with a fever. I hate fevers

  • @lucyspeople They will scream and cry if their fever isn't medicated because fever makes them (and anyone) feel like shit.  In addition to cool baths and stripping him down to his diaper, it's best to medicate for fever.  Hope he feels better soon :( The nose frida is a lifesaver!

  • @Bendicott7 - so sorry your LO is going through that! Its what I thought we had but thankfully dont. Hang in there!

LO has an ear infection. His temp was back up to 101.6 when we went into the docs office. Since he's now 6 months we can do Ibuprofen. I'm hopeful with that, and the antibiotic, that we'll be back on our feet in a couple more days.
