FTM - Hospital Bag?

What should I pack for the hospital? I'm am having scheduled a c-section, due to complications and I am trying to prepare the hospital bag. I have no idea what to pack or where to even start. I'm delivering 9wks early so I thought I had more time to prepare! Any advice?

  • I've been googling suggestions & some lists are just a little crazy sounding. Not sure if I'm just being naive, or these suggestions are legitimant.
  • I'd keep it basic.

You will want toiletries. If you're going to have your photo taken, you might want makeup. Clothes for you are a must, of course. Bring stuff that fit around 6-7mos and you won't be sad if it gets blood on it. Bring a pair of house shoes that you are willing to throw away (I bought some cheapos from Walmart) hospitals floor get gross too and you'll want warm feet. If you use a special pillow (I do so I figured it's worth mentioning), bring it. Don't forget your phone charger, or medicines you need.

I assume baby won't be coming home with you that early, so that should do it.

  • I highly highly suggest maternity yoga pants if you have them. Your pants have to be above your incision. Personally I brought my own pads, the hospital ones are so uncomfortable. Don't worry about underwear the mesh ones they gave you are awesome. Toiletries, phone chargers, ipad/nook/kindle if you have one, snacks, prune something juice or dried it will help with post birth BM's, a slipper or shoe you can slip on with a good rubber sole so you don't slip, pillow, nursing tanks if your going to pump.

  • Chapstick
    Camera
    Toiletries
Clothes for you, even if it's just going home clothes
    Nursing bra
    Pillow
Chargers, phone, iPad,etc.. (If you have them)

I had a csection and I think that's all I used. For dd we just brought a blanket and change of clothes for her to go home in.

The only thing I would add (if you are planning on nursing), is nursing pads, and your nursing pillow. The pillows in the hospital SUCK at propping up a baby, and it's pretty difficult to get the handle on positioning when it's your first time doing it, IMO. I would also bring change/cash for vending machine, and chargers for your phone and camera, just in case.

  • I over packed and ended up with a section. All I used was: cell phone/iPad and their respective chargers. (An extension cord.. Glad I brought). I brought men's sweat pants.. I had to wear them home, but I wish I had something to go over the incision. Nursing tank that I wore home... I liked the convenience of the gown while there. I wore it the first day, and most of the second. I loooooooved the mesh undies. Took a bunch home and lived in them for a week :). Socks. I brought pads, but really liked my hospitals better. They were really big and I didn't leak on anything. I asked for a pack to take home. They were great the first couple of days. I packed snacks, and never touched them. Didn't need Chapstick, but I'm glad I brought my mild scented body wash and shampoo. I brought deodorant, but did not use it. I was worried I would sweat and it would melt and the baby would get it in his mouth. Tooth paste and mouthwash.. Glad to have lol. I brought make up, I'm glad I did... It just made me feel human. No one took any pics of me.. Just the baby. So I didn't worry about looking bad for pics, I just wanted to feel normal. I packed my breast friend, and a nursing cover.. Never even opened them. The hospital pillows sucked, but they gave me a bunch so I was fine. And I didn't care who saw me feeding. I'm a very private person.. But all worries of people seeing my chest went out the window. I mean... They come in every hour to look at your cooter and the blood coming out... I was ok with the boobs!!! I think that's all I used? I think we're all assuming that your LO won't be coming home right away, so I wouldn't bring much for him/her. Maybe a special blanket or stufty, for pictures? The hospital really has them covered. Good luck!!!! I was super scared, and it was all textbook. Stay calm and enjoy every minute. It happens real fast :)
  • Every hospital I've delivered at has let my husband stay so I always pack snacks, and a change of clothes and xtra toiletries for him as well as a pair of pj pants. But I also have never had a c section and I request to go home after the 24 hrs and baby is clear to go. So maybe at least a toothbrush and deoderant for hubby too in your case to add to pp suggestions. Good luck, hope all goes well.
  • I made mistakes last time and learned from them..

  • The two things I've not seen on a packing list that you may consider are a sleeping mask and ear plugs for DH. Nurses come in ALL.NIGHT.LONG, especially with a c/s and i was happy to have my sleeping mask and just peek under it when they came in, rather than having the full room lights in your face right away. Also, DH used ear plugs so he wouldn't be bothered every time they cam in. Between the meds and the baby needing you, you're awakened every hour or so.

  • I would read a bunch of lists and then decide what is pertinent to you.  Some people will think that some things are really important and other people will think other things are important.  I'm bringing a ton of snacks because I don't agree with the whole not eating and drinking thing.  Also, I could never sleep on a different pillow so I'll be bringing my own for after the birth, as well as a nursing pillow.

I'm bringing pajamas, socks, underwear, something to wear on the trip home, shampoo, conditioner, facial cloths, face wash, soap, towel, blow dryer, moisturizer, make up, flat iron, hair brush, tooth brush, tooth paste, dental floss for myself.

For baby some clothes to wear for photos, going home outfit, receiving blankets, pacifiers, comb, emery board.

For DH: pajamas and snacks.  He'll have to come home at some point to feed our cat so he can get whatever he needs then.
  • I'm a minimalist, but even I had to bring some extra stuff, and I'm glad I did:

    1. Flip flops or shower shoes
    2. Razor w\ moisturizer strip
    3.  Cozy socks w\ rubber grips
