Baby Food Makers, Come In

We decided we are going to mix up some kind of sweet potato combination today, maybe sweet potatoes and apples. Anyone have any good sweet potato combination ideas?

Also, has anyone tried any new combos (any ingredients) that were a big hit since the last time we discussed combos?

Re: Baby Food Makers, Come In

  • The last two nights, LO has scarfed down apples, avocados, and green beans. I was just trying to hide the beans, and LO loved it! I've done sweet potato with apple and with banana. He loved both of those too.

  • Oh in terms of the second question I asked, we did blueberries and pears recently, which was a big hit.
  • Blueberry-zucchini and peach-banana-yogurt were both big hits this week.
  • I'll mix sweet potato with pretty much anything! Often I'll mix it with either peas or brocolli and meat (turkey, chicken, pork or beef). He loves it!

  • We're mixing sweet potatoes with prunes and chicken today. She hates prunes so I have to mix them in with other things.

  • Here are some I've made recently.

    Sweet potato & broccoli
    Kale, broccoli, pear, banana
    Carrot & apple
Bok choy, kale, pear, yellow squash
    Red lentil, yam, blueberry

  • Sweet potato and apple was a hit for us! Banana and sweet potato also went over really well.

  • Sweet potato and white bean was a big hit for us. You just need to rinse the beans well.
  • I feel like apples and pears are great compliments to almost anything- butternut squash, sweet potato, carrots, peas... That's all I've done homemade so far. Oh besides just smashed avocado which he didn't like at all. I need to get more creative. I have some green beans I need to make. Wonder what mixes well with them... Anyone have any ideas? Also @western diva How are you doing your meats?

Green beans and carrots with the tiniest bit of cinnamon.

I saw you asked @westerndiva about the meats. She has made many more than we have, but for chicken, we bake it in the oven and then puree it along with whatever fruit and vegetable (i.e apples, sweet potatoes, & chicken.) We plan on doing pork next--pork, apples, and lentils.
  • We did sweet potato, chicken and apple. Also, sweet potato and mango was good.

We did that first combo a couple of times before; he liked it. Haven't tried mango and sweet potato yet. Great idea! He loves mango!
  • @bc&lm awesome! Thank you!!
  • I just made sweet potato, green bean apple and turkey today. It tasted really good when I licked the spoon! That was G's favorite combo back in the day so I can't wait to see if Lo likes it too.

  • Sweet potatoes and pumpkin or chickpeas have gone well and he loves pumpkin and banana.

  • Not a baby food maker myself, but my baby loves the plum organic pouches... You could get some ideas for homemade blends from their site?

I was browsing on their site and love their ideas for the two ingredient combos. Their four ingredient combos sound awesome, but are too much to get together/have harder to find ingredients a lot of time. We typically don't mix more than three ingredients just to save money and time.

I've done sweet potato and peaches. He really liked it. Also tried sweet potato and peas (so so), sweet potato and pears, sweet potato and green beans, sweet potato and apples and sweet potato and avocado.

I feel like Bubba Gump telling Forest about all the shrimp combinations you can eat, except with sweet potatoes.

ETA: LO really likes carrots mixed with peaches as well. I found that combo on wholesome baby foods website. Never would have put those two together. Also, squash and peas are a hit and he doesn't like peas all that much. Pears and parsnip got him to eat parsnip, too.

My husband and I laughed out loud at the Forrest Gump reference! Seriously, though, that's an awesome list. We haven't done peaches yet because they don't have fresh organic peaches around here at this time of year, and that's what I want to use. But everything else he eats, so that works great!
  • I had really good luck with frozen organic peaches and DS loved them.

What brand? I have seen frozen peaches, but I don't believe they were organic. Did you go to a regular store or somewhere like Whole Foods to get them?

I did get them at whole foods, but they were only a couple dollars. I tend to mix peaches with things, so one bag went a long way for us.

Unfortunately the nearest Whole Foods to me is in the next state over, but it's probably only like a 20 min drive. I have to go somewhere nearby there sometime soon, so I will have to stop by and check it out.
  • Sweet potato chicken is a big hit at our house
