Breastfeeding

First NIP OMGOSH

so I had my first nursing in public out to dinner with the family. I decided to try a blanket because I haven't purchased a cover yet. BAD IDEA! LO decides he is to distracted to eat (but also very hungry) and moves and thrashes so my DH had to help hold the blanket in place. But that wasn't even the bad part, it was handled fine. The worst was the freaky dad at the table across from me who kept staring at me! Sitting at his table with wife and newborn. Geeez I couldn't believe it. I finally gave him a look like WTF and he stopped. So whatever tomorrow I'm going to buy a cover and that is that. Next time having the blanket attached to me so I have both hands free will be I assume a lot better. First time over now for getting a system down :)

  • My first time NIP was at a restaurant too. My DH bullied me into NiP bc he didnt like that I wasnt willing to go anywhere since I always had to BF. I just covered up w a blanket too. Congrats on getting the first time over with. :)

  • I nip and very rarely have used a cover. I wear two layers, I pull one shirt up and the bottom layer keeps any skin from showing besides my boob. After I get her latched on I just pull the shirt that I had pulled up down a little lower. My sister said that you can't see anything when I nurse that way. The hardest part is getting my nipple in her mouth without it being out too long...

  • I live in India and I NIP with a cover! When I lived in Dubai, I used to NIP with a cover too but Dubai was fantastic in that every place had comfy seating areas for nursing mums adjacent to large and clean ladies rooms.

Here in Mumbai, it seems to be a bigger deal even with a cover but I don't care... I need to get out of the house. I unfortunately cant NIP discreetly because my boobs are bigger than DD2 head! Its so interesting that the Indian culture is so very into motherhood and breastfeeding as an expected outcome of having your baby, yet public nursing is so shocking.

  • I tried the A&A blanket the other day. It worked but was awkward. I bought an infinity scarf, and it kept me covered without any awkwardness.

  • Good luck!  I also do the shirt up/down thing while NIP.  And I use the Bebe au Lait cover (sp?).  However, if you have a thrasher it may not help!  I was lucky in that DS was kind of OK until about 4 months. Then he learned to grab the cover and whip it about, exposing me in the process.
  • I'm sure the dad was just watching to see if it could be done....maybe his wife is uncomfortable, or he is uncomfortable about her doing it and exposing herself. I'm sure he was just watching to see if you ended up exposed to know if his wife would if she NIP. I always wear a tank and try to match the color (whit shirt/white tank or gray tank/gray shirt) so they blend together more when the shirt is up and the tank is covering the PP belly.
