3rd Trimester

Twins & not know??

Hey y'all,
I need some help!! I will be 36 weeks Tus. I had a doc appt. last fri. Well, while he was checking her heart beat, he keep moving it round (after he found her heart beat) Well, I asked him if everything is ok?? He then asked me what my last U/S said. (NOTE: It told me I was/am having a healthy little girl) After telling him that, he dint seem to believe it.
On the 18th, I ended up going to the hospital with contractions. (My mom was with me since my husband is out of town for work) She keep looking at me funny & asking if they are 100% sure that i'm only have 1 baby. She then told me that it sounded like there was 2 heart beats (one a beat off from the other) She recorded it & sent it to my husband who said the same thing.
My question is, could I really be pregnant with twins & not know it until last min? (I want to get another U/S to check) I go back in this fri. & plan on talking to the doc about the changes then. Has this happen to any other moms-2-be??

There is a major artery in your stomach area that sounds similar to the baby's heartbeat. It was probably that.

  • Back in the day, before ultrasounds, it was pretty common. My grandma didn't know she was having twins until they tried to deliver the placenta and another baby popped out (grandma's words, not mine). But that was in 1972. I can only imagine IF it's possible, it would extremely rare and/or in poorer countries without our medical standards.

  • I didn't know until my 2 week ultrasound, but at that point it was very obvious there were extra parts present.. Lol.

  • The doctor asking about your last ultrasound could have been a casual question and something he asks all patients. He also could have been reacting to something he saw or heard (measuring ahead or behind, a strange noise), but if he had real concerns he'd have ordered another ultrasound right away and told you what he was looking for. Looking around =\= he thinks there are twins.

Did you ask why he asked about your ultrasound?

  • Simple question did you have an anatomy scan? If so there is no missing another baby while they are taking detailed measurements etc

This exactly. There's pretty much no way you miss a second baby at a 20wk anatomy scan u/s. Missed twins can happen but it's rare and almost always is prior to 8 weeks when the babies share a sac. Another instance would be not having an u/s till 20wks and finding out then. As PP said, your OB's question was most likely a casual small talk one.
