kombucha

Apologies if this has been discussed somewhere else, I can't find a search function on the mobile site.

What are you ladies thoughts on kombucha? I'm out at a friends place watching the game (go Hawks, yeah!) and drank a bottle of kombucha over the past 3hrs. A bit of googling reveals opinions from it's totally fine vs don't drink it. What do you all think?

Re: kombucha

  • What exactly is your concern with kombucha? Alcohol? Caffeine? Bacteria?

(The search function on a mobile is at the very bottom. You'll see a magnifying glass at the end of the row of page numbers.)

    Thanks re: search function

I don't know if I have any specific concerns. It sounds like the actual alcohol content is low. Be good to find out more about the caffeine content though.
I'm just interested to find out what other bumpies think and if any of you drink it regularly? I'm definitely interested in the health benefits.
  • My midwife actually recommended it.

I have them on occasion, not regularly. I disagree with a lot of Western medicine, so when I saw that the Weston A. Price diet says the probiotics are beneficial, I decided it was ok to drink. (He also recommends a quart of raw milk oer day for pregnant women, so clearly this is different than the norm.) He says that some people have adverse reactions to it, so don't try it for the first time during pregnancy. I assume this is why most practitioners don't recommend it.

I did not discuss this with my midwife; this is just my opinion. You should do what feels comfortable for you.
  • I have had 1 or 2 bottles throughout pregnancy. I can't drink the entire bottle as i used to because i start to feel hot (?)

I actually have this question for my naturopath. I see her tommorow
  • I guess I would mainly be concerned about the bacteria, thus I haven't had any since being pregnant. But thats just me.
  • I used to drink it daily but have been avoiding it during the pregnancy. It's fermented and has bacteria in it, that scares me a little bit. I'm not sure if it's okay to have.. I haven't researched it much.
  • @joules235 I saw a starter kit at our local grocery store yesterday and am pretty keen to give brewing it at home it a go - is there any specific recipe/method you use?
  • Cool thanks for the tips. Looks like a good project for this weekend!
