Question - Baby Carriers fitting in Cars

I have a question for the STM's really. My sister was complaining when she had my nephew about her carrier/base not fitting and sitting correctly in the backseat. She had it positioned in the middle and she had a Nissan Rogue at the time. She said the base wouldn't sit flat and it was pushing into the backseats too much. Then she said if she moved it over to behind the passenger seat you had to move the seat so far forward the person in the front seat was almost against the dash. She was using a Gracco. I too have a Nissan Rogue and am starting to think about what brand I want to go with but I don't know if I'll encounter the same issue.

Did anyone else have issues getting the carriers to fit in their vehicles, was it just user error on my sisters part (I am leaning toward that!) or is she correct? Thanks for your feedback.

Re: Question - Baby Carriers fitting in Cars

  • I have a Mazda CX-7 which is pretty much the same thing. I never had an issue with out Chicco KeyFit30.
  • Loading the player...
  • We had a Graco carseat with DS and I had no problem whatsoever getting to fit properly in our cars, IL's, or my parent's cars. (We all have different size cars, too).

The only issue I had in my car was not being able to put it in the middle because there was no latch for that seat.

But I agree with what @Babywear said, if you are unsure have a professional look at it and help you!
  • We sort of had that problem, too.  For DS, we had a Maxi Cosi Mico, and we had to put it behind the passenger seat of our Milan.  If we put it behind the driver seat, it was fine for me (5'4"), but it didn't give my DH enough room to move the seat back when he drove (he's 6').

car-seat.org is a great resource.  They have forums and you can ask about specific car seats for your specific car.  After that, I would recommend seeing a "professional fitter" to be sure the car seat is properly and safely installed.  (Your local hospital and/or fire department might have professional fitters, or they would at least be able to direct your call).

  • we had the same issue and took our carseat to be checked, they put this thing under the base to make it sit flat. they said you can also use a rolled up towel or something like that. the thing they used looked like a pool noodle and in fact might have been one.
  •  Yes, but if you use a pool noodle, make sure that it's a "solid" noodle.  Most of the ones out now have a "core" cut out of them.  I brought one along when I went to the fire dept (they do fittings around here), and they said they special order ones without that cut out, they're safer as they maintain their shape better.

  • Babies R Us/Toys R Us will also let you take the car seats out to your car to try fitting them before you buy them.  We did that for C's convertible seat and it was great.  We took out the two we thought we wanted and got the one that fit better (both RF and FF).  We had a Graco bucket seat when she was an infant and it fit fine in both my Honda Fit and DH's Subaru Legacy.  It went behind the passenger and while it was a little tight leg room wise in the Fit, it worked.

    Married DH 7/30/11

    CSC arrived 5/7/12

    CHC arrived 6/2/14

  • We went to buy buy baby and tried out the seats since we were not sure how they would fit. We needed to be able to fit two infant carriers and be able to still sit comfortably. They let us take two out to the car to try out!

  • We had to use a rolled-up towel to make our Graco base level in our mini-van. It was an easy fix.
  • Thanks for the tips everyone!! I was wrong earlier, it was a Chicco model, not Graco, but I still feel better based off all of your advice. Sounds like my sister was trying to justify getting a new Honda pilot!! I had a feeling she was crazy;-)

  • We have the same problem with my husbands truck. It's the extended cab but doesn't have the third door so we just put my sons booster seat in the middle but the infant carseat won't fit behind the front seats so wee gonna move Colton over and scoot the passenger seat forward. Hopefully I won't be kissing the dash the whole time.
  • If you google "car seat safety" the government website will come up. It not only reviews all the seats, but tells you the rating for the size and make of vehicles.

  • The Chicco Keyfit 30 and the Britax Somethingorother fits into my dad's Altima, my mom's Prius, and our Dodge Caliber. That being said, some cars are kind of small. I would just see if you could borrow one from a friend or ask a store employee if they can give you info on which seats might be best suited for your car.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

I have that issue. We can't find seats that fit in our dodge durango. We have been putting DD's car seat in the middle seat and it fits there but if we put it behind either seat we have to move the seat so far forward that our knees smash into the dash.

We are looking into buying a mini van.

I have a Dodge Durango as well with the 3rd row seat. I'm hoping since I'm not short, but have short legs, that I will find a car seat that fits in my Dodge comfortably. My oldest wants to be able to sit in the third row, so I'll have DS2 behind me and LO diagonal from me behind the passenger seat. Once LO is here all family trips will be in my car because it'll be easier than our big truck, and my back seat now is a bit bigger than the back seat in my old explorer and the car seat for DS2 fit fine in it so I'm hoping to test out a couple and see what fits best but the Gracos I had for both my DSs where great in my Ford, their bio dads Dodge, My moms Altima, Sisters Forenza and my dads Dakota without fitting being an issue. So I'm hoping to have the same luck this time. :)
