Bottles & MIL

What would you do? My DS is only on 2 bottles - one before his nap and one about 30 minutes or so before bed at night. I would like to get rid of his afternoon bottle very soon. My MIL watches DS twice a week and even though he doesn't need the bottles - I think she might have a hard time letting go of the bottle. Why? Because she uses that time to cuddle with him. Recently she took one of my bottles in case I ever forgot his bottle when she watches him. Now I'm afriad when I finally says no more afternoon bottle - she will continue to do it behind my back.

Re: Bottles & MIL

  • I really understand how you feel.  I am dealing with this with my FIL.  I think it is easier for him to just give her a bottle.  When he tries the sippy cup, she barely drinks it, and then he is concerned that she will get dehrydated and not get enough milk.

It is like we are going to transition her when she is ready.  But I feel like if she had been a daycare they would have transitioned her faster to a sippy cup or a cup if she was in the toddler room at a daycare.

I am still trying to figure out what to do about it.

  • Well DS started daycare this week - and so 3 of the 7 days - he isn't getting a bottle before nap so naturally I think now is a great time to stop that bottle all together - I know he isn't going to miss it but the longer we continue - I think the more of a problem it could become.

My parents watch DS while I work and I know how you feel. They have their own way of doing things and I feel bad having to put my foot down so that things are more consistent between the two houses. When we made the switch I told them the day before we are getting rid of them cold turkey. When I dropped him off I asked for their bottles so I could sterilize and  pack them away.

They can still cuddle with a sippy.
We didn't have an issue with my MIL and getting rid of the bottles, but I do cuddle with DD when she is drinking from her sippy. She has one first thing in the morning and right before bed.

Also, we had terrible luck with a sippy cup until we tried a straw one. You may want to try that.

  • My in laws watch our DD full-time. We just told them the pediatrician said no more bottles, period. Then explained the bad stuff that comes from prolonged bottle use. That worked. My FIL is pretty amenable to taking direction and is a scientist, so he feels at one with the doc. My MIL is very appearance-conscious, so concern about crooked or rotten teeth did it for her! And I would stop ALL bottles. If you're still doing it, why wouldn't your MIL? I don't expect my in laws to do anything I'm not willing and able to do.
