Bump growth w/ twins compared to singleton

I'm getting anxiety about how big I am already. Looking back on my bump pics from my first is not exactly helping. I'm at 18 weeks now and I probably compare to how I looked at around 22 weeks then. I'm also a hell of a lot more uncomfortable this time around.

If you had one before multiples, did you notice a pretty sizable (pun) difference with your own growth early on? I know there's usually a big difference toward the middle-end, this just feels early to feel so big.

Everything has gone well so far with this pregnancy and the babies are doing great. I'm just worried about how much discomfort I'm going to be in down the line.

Re: Bump growth w/ twins compared to singleton

  • This is my first pregnancy but I'm 28 weeks, have two 5lb placentas and two 3lb babies. There is no way I would be this big with a singleton.

  • I'm huge already and not quite 13 weeks. I probably look like I did around maybe 18 or 19 weeks with DD. With my first set of twins, at 5 months I measured 7 months, so it's totally normal, and I'm freaked about how huge and uncomfortable I'll be, too!

  • Yep. I started measuring ahead around week 16. By the time I hit 30 weeks I looked as big as I did at 39 weeks with DD.

DH measured me just for kicks at 37 weeks and I was 56.5" around my bump...which is really funny when you consider I'm only 59" tall. I felt like Violet Beauregard in the blueberry suit.

  • Yeah, you have twice the number of babies as before.....if I were you, I'd stop comparing right now. The human body is an amazing thing, though....you'll get pretty big, you won't be comfortable, but you will do it. And after the babies are born you'll look back in awe.:)

I was definitely much bigger... I delivered at 31 weeks but was bigger if not the same size as I was when I delivered my singleton at 40 weeks.

First off I was horrible about bump pictures with both pregnancies and had to go way back in Facebook photos to find the one of my first lol so with that being said these are the weeks I have that were the closest. I am proof that you are not always bigger. I was much larger with my first baby a singleton than I was with my twins. But as you can see with my singleton (31 weeks) I'm basically the size I was with my twins at 34 weeks. My singleton was 7 pound and 21 inches my twins A was 4 pounds 15.5 oz and 17 3/4 inches and B was 4 pounds 1 oz and 17 inches. When I delivered (I was in labor in this picture). I gained more with my twins too but only by 5 pounds. So no you don't always get bigger. In fact I was the complete opposite! Bigger with my first son and smaller with these two little boys! .... I measured ahead the first trimester and until week 24 then I evened out. I freaked out about discomfort too and size but once I passed the half way point I stayed steady with bump size

  • Thanks for the reassurance ladies. Car seat and Mell - beautiful bumps!

Just to give you a sense of why I'm a little freaked, here's me at 18 weeks with my singleton pregnancy, and at 18 weeks with this one. Quite a difference. I've also gotten a couple of comments this week that have made me a little self conscious.

I'll try not to stress too much about this. There are plenty of other things to stress about!

  • I feel the same way, don't worry. I just saw a belly pic of me at 20 weeks with DD (I'm 21 weeks now with identical boys) and could not believe the difference. My DH was in shock when he saw it. I would say that I look and feel AT LEAST 7 months prego right now compared to last time. I'm definitely feeling that "holy shit, this is going to get crazy" feeling. Some weeks I am gaining three lbs a week, which is way more than I want/ need to be gaining. Btw, you don't look pregnant at all in that first pic and in the second you def don't look huge like you have more than one baby in there, so don't worry. @car seat...holy crap! That is an awesome comparison pic. I love it! :)
  • Just for fun, here is a comparison. First pic is 28 weeks with DD, 2nd pic is 20 weeks with twins.
  • Yes, I was significantly bigger with the twins than my singleton early on, but it was my second pregnancy so I know that had a lot to do with it. I also carried completely differently. Straight out with the twins vs. all around with the singleton. So that also made my belly look bigger probably.

  • These are babies 7&8 for us. 1-6 were singletons. I'm 4'10" and carry all out front in belly. At 24.6w I measured 37w. Now at 26 I measure 38. So 12 w ahead LOL
  • When did y'all actually start noticing bump growth? I'm only 7 1/2 weeks and I feel like my belly is significantly growing! I'm sure it's bloating, but since I'm pregnant with twins I really wouldn't know.
  • I had a little bump by 12 weeks but my big growth spurt happened around 21 weeks. I've never been so hungry in my life.

  • I have no comparison since the twins were my first pregnancy but I was measuring 5 weeks ahead throughout most of my pregnancy. I delivered at 34w4d and was measuring 38w4d in size.
