Trouble TTC

How many times will an RE do IUI's if the keep being unsucessful??

edited January 2014 in Trouble TTC
I will be gearing up to start IUI # 3 this week hopefully my cyst vanished this will be my second IUI with clomid. My first IUI was with injections. I was wondering how many IUI's will a RE do without success just curious because unfortunately I'm not eligible for IVF that's what my RE said after my Injection IUI cycle was a bomb now I did however have better results with my IUI cycle that used clomid. I'm feeling extremely frustrated I know that most people would just go on to IVF though if they haven't had any sucess with IUI's

TTC since 2012

Dx : DOR

IUI #1 (Follistim switched over to Menopur injections) - BFN

Attempted IUI #2 (Menopur injections only cycle) better response on the Menopur then the Follistim combination treatment cycle however my cycle was still canceled due to my eggs not maturing and follicles not growing enough on a high dose of Menopur (Re said I could try a cycle of comid + ovidrel  for an IUI) for my second IUI( praying this works for us)

Clomid + Ovidrel protocol worked still a BFN as a result

Attempted cycle  Clomid  + Ovidrel protocol for IUI # 3 (Unable to do this cycle due to a cyst)

IUI # 3 Clomid+ Ovidrel protocol - BFP    Beta #1 752  Beta #2  1536    Beta #3 3797

EDD 10/27/14

Our sweet baby boy arrived on 9/2/14 TTC # 2 Conceived without help- June 2015 July 2015- Miscarriage ( blighted ovum)
March 2016 (ectopic pregnancy) :(

  • I think it's decided on a case-by-case situation, but what I understand that if IUI doesn't work within 3-4 cycles then it most likely will not work for you.  But there were a few BFP on the board recently that I think were IUI #4 or #5, so it's not impossible!  Best of luck!

  • At least 3-4, up to 5 or 6. I know that you were looking into a second opinion, how did that go? If it doesn't work after a few IUIs with clomid, I would think that your RE should be willing to try injects again and either adjust your dose or try a different combination of meds.

  • I'm doing my 6th IUI this month and 5 have been medicated but different protocols. I did 4 with just clomid, 1 with combo clomid+follistim, and now this one is jus to follistim. My insurance requires 6 medicated cycles prior to IVF. My RE will do as many as I want but as a rule of thumb she said after 3 on 1 protocol it's time to switch. Our problem is with the sperm so hopefully the meds my DH is on will help that and out IUI will finally be successful, but I'm not holding my breath. 6 cycles of IUI disappointment is a lot!

  • I'm in the same boat, and curious about the same.  I am gearing up for my 4th IUI, and am worried where I will be left in the future.  My insurance doesn't cover IVF, and DH & I really can't afford it on our own.

I was hoping to try 3 more IUI's (taking us to 6 total), and if they don't work I may take a break and consider adoption.  Just the thought breaks my heart. :(

Why aren't you eligible for IVF?  Meaning your insurance won't cover it, or your medical condition precludes it?  If it's the first, I'm sorry - that stinks.  You could try looking into clinical trials to help on costs.  If it's the second, again, there might be clinical trials for DOR.  But it looks like you've just done Clomid - is it possible you'd respond better to Femara, or injectables?  I'd ask for a second opinion before just writing off all possibilities beyond Clomid & IUI.

I hope you find an answer!

We're doing 1 unmedicated IUI (I'd kind of like to do 2, but it doesn't increase our chances much and money doesn't grow on trees), 1 Femara + Follistim TI cycle, and then 2-3 Femara + Follistim IUIs.  The studies show that the chances per cycle decrease significantly after 3, but there's still plenty of people who get pregnant after that (it's just not worth throwing lots of money into if you're out of pocket).  After 6 cycles, there's very few people who get BFPs on the same protocol.

I'm not eligible for IVF because I didn't produce enough follicles on a high dose of Follistim then Menopur when I was doing my first IUI cycle . My Second IUI I was put on Clomid+ Ovidrel and that worked really well still a BFN though I was gearing up for my third IUI but got benched in December due to an ovarian cyst. This week I'll be gearing up for IUI# 3 hopefully.

  • iloveflipflops - You're at SG right?  My doc is Dr. Kip and I asked him this question in our initial consultation.  I was told 3-4 cycles of IUI are normal.  I was also told that I will have a hand in deciding our treatment.  I know folks who have gone through up to 8 cycles of IUI and have gotten lucky on that 8th try.

Married on October 20, 2012.  Began trying in January 2013.
RE appointment & testing December 2013 - February 2014= Unexplained IF, possible endometriosis
IUI#1- March 22 (100mg clomid, 75 mg of Bravelle, Ovidrel trigger) = BFP!!!

  • I just did my 6th IUI today. You can see my history in my Sig and we tended to use different meds combinations and doses each cycle. My RE recommends moving to IVF if this cycle doesn't work because the chances are better but I'm not in a rush cause of cost. As long as there's still a chance I will do a few more.

Me and DH: 32, TTC since 2/2012
Dx: lean PCOS, low hormone levels, 2 CP's before seeing RE, MTHFR heterozygous
IUI #1 with clomid and ovidrel: BFN
IUI #2 with clomid (unresponsive), femara, ovidrel and novarel: Possible CP
IUI #3 with femara, ovidrel and novarel: BFN
IUI #4 with Follistim (115 iu) and ovidrel= BFN, developed OHSS, benched- 2 weeks of birth control pills
IUI #5 with Follistim (75iu) and ovidrel= BFN........Taking a medication break for a few months
IUI #6 with Follistim (75iu) every other day, femara and Lupron trigger= BFN
