Omnicef.....(sp?)

Question for the ear infection warrior mamas.......LO was out on omnicef on Friday for her double ear infection.....since the last one was exactly a month ago they thought she would benefit from something stronger.......anywho - yesterday she definitely seemed like she was getting better, but today it is like she regressed......no fever though and she did sleep last night, both of which are good signs - but my question is how long on this medicine before I see her get back to normal? Would love some feedback...

Unfortunately, the Omnicef did not clear up D's ear infections like they thought it would since it was supposed to be stronger. He ended up having a double ear infection when he went for his recheck and they put him on Augmentin instead. The Augmentin is what cleared his ear infections. We saw improvement for a couple of days when he was on the Omnicef and then it seemed like it wasn't working anymore. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Hopefully, another mama who has had success with Omnicef can weigh in.

We are omnicef veterans. It usually worked for us, but I think it depends on the kid and the bacteria for sure! I would give it 4 days and call back if LO isn't significantly better. Also, in case they didn't warn you, it can give LO brick red poop! Fun side effect.... Good luck!

We had to stop using it because of the diarrhea, lots of bananas, toast, rice...stuff like that. However after 4-5 days we did notice a difference

I agree with about 4 days. It didn't work for DS either, ended up using augmentin which is what cleared it. And the probiotics or some yogurt will help with the loose poops. We have to be all over that and lots of diaper cream when DS is on antibiotics since he ends up with such bad rashes. 10 ear infections and we're pros now!

Did you get her in to be seen?? I typed before reading your last post....

I haven't called yet. Today is day 4. I'm giving it one more day. I mean she seems to be getting better very, very slowly but she still seems really sick to me. I hope that makes sense. It's killing me

she looked awful tonight but her demeanor was better....she's also not having anything more than a purée

One really common side effect of any antibiotic is diarrhea, unfortunately and switching most likely won't help with that. It's totally okay to switch antibiotics if it's not doing any good, but I'd say give it 5 days, then call your doctor. Switching an antibiotic without finishing the course can often breed hardier bacteria and create resistance. Hope she gets better soon!

I would not switch just because of Diarreah. Today is day 5. She was didn't do more than a 3.5 hour stretch last night and woke herself up coughing several times. this morning she cried non stop. There is no way in hell this crap is working. My husband insists on putting the call into the dr. (how funny that this is how he decides he is going to help, not dealing with her at any point in the night.....) so I'm just sitting here helpless waiting to hear from him. If you haven't caught on - I am MISERABLE, probably as miserable and cranky as she is (which is justified since i have not slept in days and am getting sick myself).

Oh man - hope you get in asap!! And that you both get some sleep! Ask them for some probiotic samples - our pedi usually gives me enough to get through a 10 day script.

So we just got done and it was actually an interesting appointment. Pedi believes that it was a viral ear infection and not a bacterial, as there were no symptoms leading up to it and the first 24 hours after she started the meds were her best... (he said bacterial infections typically take 48 hours to respond). He was also really happy with how her ears looked and actually shortened the script for omnicef.....All kind of shocking....but I do realize viruses can be more finicky to treat etc. Her chest is also clear which was another concern of mine.

Then I had him check her teeth. She has had one top tooth that has been "close" and "right there" since our dr appointment 12/16. Low and behold - once he got in there I saw that sure enough it's FINALLY cut. Knowing what a hard time my LO has with her teeth I have no doubt this is what's kept her up the past two nights.

So while it kills me to see her so miserable, I do feel like there is a light at the end of the tunnel.... Hoepfully it's not just another train coming at me
