Bleeding diaper rash....help! **update**

Anyone have any suggestions for diaper rash that is bleeding right around the rectum? I am EBF and baby is almost three weeks old. The redness started about 3 days ago and I just noticed the bleeding today.

I'm trying not to freak out and can't get ahold of pediatrician until tomorrow morning. :(

**update**
Ok ladies so while waiting for the pediatrician, I stopped using wipes, made sure the diapers weren't scented, and started using desitin and aquafor. It has cleared up quite a bit. The pedi's nurse finally called me back and wants me to apply maalox with a cotton ball and then put a zinc based ointment over that until it's completely cleared up.

Thank you ladies for helping keep my sanity!

Smooches!!

  • Don't use wipes to clean the infected area. If you can - don't put the baby in a diaper. I know you risk poop and pee on a blanket, but you need to expose the bottom to fresh air.  As for creams to use (or not) I don't have recommendations as I haven't experienced a bleeding diaper rash before (knock on wood).

    Hopefully it heals quickly!

  • Def don't use wipes and try to soak the baby's bottom in warm water and allow it to air dry. You can also cut some old cotton tees into strips and use it as a barrier to the diaper. It will clear up quickly.

  • Get some pee pads used for puppies when house training them and have baby sleep on that butt naked. Use warm water to wash, no wipes or powder.
We have a home remedy by using peach leaves and steep them in hot water to make a tea and use that as bath water.

  • You may need to switch diaper/wipes brands as well. Some babies are just really sensitive.
I've also been using my bamboobies nipple butter as rash cream for Annabelle. Its all organic, natural ingredients. She turned red from the hospital pampers, and probably over wiping.

  • Thanks ladies! Until I can reach the pedi, I'm cleaning her little booty with warm water and no wiping.
  • I would also consider changing diapers as I've heard some babies have bad reactions to the chemicals used.

  • Put baking soda in warm bath water and let baby's bottom soak, it helps with the irritation and soothes also
  • In terms of creams, I like the Desitin Rapid Relief (the blue tube). Then over that put Vaseline or A&D ointment (the petroleum jelly kind). That will create a protective barrier between the Desitin and the diaper absorbing the Desitin, so that the Desitin can stay on the skin and work.

  • DS1 had this. Don't use wipes, you can rinse the booty with some warm water and then take a hair dryer on the COOL setting and gently dry it. As much diaper-free time as possible..open air will do wonders. Just put down a blanket that can be peed and pooped on. When DS1 had this we went to the pedi and they gave us both an antibacterial and antifungal ointment and we alternated between them. Get the highest level diaper cream and slather that stuff on when you have to have a diaper.

GL...honestly DS1's rash only cleared up once he stopped pooping so frequently, I think around 6-7 weeks.
