Caffeine

I avoided it while pregnant and have since DD was born and nursing. Now I'm back to work and I feel like I am going to desperately need something to help me get through the day.

Is any amount of caffeine safe, meaning won't leave my DD up and ready to party all night (that is, if she isn't already)?

  • I am sure it depends on the baby, but I have never had a problem. I also avoided caffeine while pregnant. I would die now without my AM cup of joe.

  • how old is your LO?
    I think there is a table on Kellymom or somewhere that lists the half-life of caffeine at different ages.  But I'd just try it and see how LO does-- if they seem affected by it, drink less, and/or wait for a few weeks and try again.
    1-2 cups of coffee is absolutely safe.  Not sure about 6 or 7, but if you haven't had caffeine in the last year, 1-2 cups should be like heaven!  Enjoy!

    (though I would stick to coffee and tea-- I would not do things like Monster or Redbull or things like that)

  • Like you. I cut is when I was ebf when I was home with DS. Now that I am back at work BS pumping, I hve one or two (larger sized) cups. Usually one in the am and one in the pm.

    I haven't noticed too much differnce with DS.

  • I drink coffee or pop, pretty much daily. When I was at home, I drank it very minimally, maybe a glass or two of pop the whole time I was off. But when I returned to work, I definitely needed caffeine to get me through the day.  I usually pump and then have my caffeine. I pump about every 4 hours and drink plenty of water in between, so by the next time I pump, it's mostly out of my system.

  • I usually have 2 cups of coffe and a can of coke a day and it doesn't affect my LO
