mastitis during pregnancy?

Back story: I'm 39w4d and fell asleep on the couch on my side yesterday afternoon. When I woke up I was having some pain in my left breast, which I thought was just caused by sleeping with my bra on. So in the middle of the night last night I kept waking up with the chills. I checked myself out this morning in the mirror and i noticed some redness from my armpit to my nipple. Called my doctor's office and the on call attending said it sounds oddly like mastitis. She started me on antibiotics until I can go in and see someone on Monday morning. I've been taking Tylenol and alternating hot/cold compresses.

Wondering if anyone has heard of this or has any experience with it?  Will this cause any issues when baby comes and tries to breastfeed?

Re: mastitis during pregnancy?

  • I had mastitis around 39 weeks with DS1. I felt terrible but around 24 hours after starting the antibiotics I started feeling better. I did get a yeast infection because of the antibiotics so watch out for that. I was finishing up the antibiotics during my induction (due to cholestasis). It did not affect my nursing abilities- I went on to nurse without issues for 15 months. I never got mastitis when he was an outside baby either. I did have trouble with lots of clogged ducts though.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • Hey I'm from Ireland and it could be an old wives take but it seems to work... If u put cabbage leaves in your bra it can help to clear/soothe the infection- maybe work a try
  • You poor thing. I didn't know it could happen prior to birth. I had it when I was nursing last time, and it was a painful, ugly, nasty sickness. They told me to pump and feed as much as possible, which I recognize is tough for you with an inside baby. Would pumping help though? Also, try warm, wet heat on the spot (washcloth, etc.). I found that the most effective. Good luck to you - that stinks! :(

I actually don't have a pump yet. My insurance won't cover one until I have the baby. I tried hand expressing this morning in the shower. So with that coupled with the antibiotics the pain seems to be slowly subsiding.

I never thought I'd say this, but I hope the baby stays inside until this resolves!

My OB actually said NOT to pump when I got it. It may have helped a bit with the infection but I think there are some studies that show pumping can at times be too much stimulation for induction of labor and cause tetanic contractions and problems with baby's heart rate. She said pumping while in third tri should only be done under doctors supervision unless you are "used" to it (as in tandem nursing).
  • Good information. Thank you! Hopefully I can get an appointment with my doc first thing tomorrow morning.

    I appreciate everyone's feedback!
