Please recommend your front facing carrier

Hi Ladies,

I am interested in a front facing carrier for DS.  He is about 3.5 months, roughly 16 lbs and holds his head up well.

Unfortunately, he has not been a fan of the Moby or Ktan wraps despite multiple attempts on my part.  He prefers a more structured carrier, and does well in the Ergo carrier now that he is big enough to have his legs out.

I am pretty happy with the Ergo, but we are thinking of getting a forward facing carrier so that he can see more of what's going on around him.  DH would like to wear it, too.  I have a friend who used Baby Bjorn and liked it, but I am looking for additional suggestions.

Thanks!

Re: Please recommend your front facing carrier

  • I'd suggest against FF for a few reasons.  Biggest - it's very hard on the wearer's back as baby's weight is pulling away from your core vs. being snugged into you.  It's also not ideal for baby.  Honestly, he's old enough to simply turn his head to see - we tend to think they don't see much facing in but they do!  Other alternatives are a hip carry (which you can do in the ergo although other carriers like ring slings or woven wraps work better) or a high back carry where he can see over your shoulder (for which you would need a woven wrap or a mei tai).

  • The Beco Gemini can be worn FF, but I do agree with PP that it's not the best option especially if you intend to do it for long periods of time.  Also, the Beco doesn't recommend you use it FF until LO is 6 months old.  At that point we started using ours for very short amounts of time, like the grocery store.

I do love the Beco though.  Very comfy facing in, hip carrying, and back carrying. MH (5 foot 11" with fairy broad shoulders) and I (5 foot 8" fairy skinny frame) can both adjust it to fit us well.

  • Ditto the PPs.  I have a few friends who used a Bjorn and then switched to either the Ergo and a Beco, and they all loved the Ergo or Beco much better than the Bjorn.  We use an Ergo, and both DH and I carry DS in it (and still do, occasionally at 19 months, though he likes to walk on his own now if given a choice).
