Clogged ducts causing pain during BFing?

I've discovered that whenever I have a clogged duct, it makes feedings extremely painful on the affected side. I know clogged ducts can be tender and painful in the area where it's at, but I hadn't heard of them making feedings painful. Whenever DD is feeding on that side, it feels like daggers every time she sucks, the entire feeding. This pain lasts during every feeding until the clog is gone. For the longest time I couldn't figure out why I was going through periods of pain-free feeding, then all the sudden it would start hurting again on one or both sides. I'm glad I've finally figured out the cause, and I'm taking Lecithin so hopefully that will help. Just curious if anyone else has had this experience?

Re: Clogged ducts causing pain during BFing?

  • I definitely had the pain, which is how I found out it was a clogged duct. Did the medicine help? I massaged constantly and pumped a lot so that I could have my hubby feed her when it hurt too much.

  • So far it's not helping since I still seem to be getting clogs at least once a week, usually more often. But I'm hoping that if I keep taking it, over time it will help! I've also been doing massage with coconut oil, I've tried castor oil compresses, I've tried dangle feeding (but she hates it), hot showers, etc. Any other ideas are welcome!
  • Hope it gets better! I had a clogged duct yesterday and jut massaged it while DD nursed on that side and then pumped as well and it's already gone. It actually felt better for me when she nursed like she was sucking the clog out haha :)

Glad it's gone! Sometimes that works for me, but other times I get really stubborn ones that take a lot of work to get out. I also seem to get them in clumps, like right now I have about 3 all in the same area of one breast. Super painful :(
  • Well, I thought thrush too, but we've been checked twice for it and Dr says no thrush. Also had him check for lip/tongue tie and he said she doesn't have that either.
  • Yes, I experienced this all the time.  Lecithin made a world of difference.  Keep to a strict nursing/pumping schedule so that you don't get backed up and hopefully the Lecithin will make clogs less likely.

  • For those that take Lecithin- how much do you take/day? And do you take soy lecithin? Regular? I've seen a few varieties and read varied dosage recommendations.

  • I have had a ton if clogged ducts so far and have been EP for almost 5 weeks. I have been taking lecithin 1200mg three times a day and since starting have only had 2 clogged ducts that resolved the same day I noticed it. That is the dose that my LC told me about. I know u can wean to just once a day after a while as well. I just bought whatever lethicin I found. Funny I found it at cvs the cheapest and it was b1g1. Good luck!
