Vitamin D Drops

Has anyone else started giving vitamin D drops? Our pediatrician said all breast fed babies need them. We started yesterday with the recommended dose, which was big to me, and not sure how I feel about it. The taste is super strong and I feel like he was extra bubbly for hours after. I'm thinking of splitting the dose and doing right before nursing to wash it down. So far not a fan! How long do they need them for?

Re: Vitamin D Drops

  • I dd the d visol with ds1 but for ds2 I have switched to Carlson vitamin d drops and you only need to put one drop on your nipple. Much less unneeded artificial fillers for baby. That may solve your problem.

This.  While DS2 isn't here yet, we used the Carlson Vitamin D drops with DS1.  I liked that one drop was all that was needed.

  • I breastfed both babies and I was not advised to do the vitamin D drops.

  • Thanks @blondie10m !  I just ordered the Carlson ones from Amazon… I think I'll hold off on the full dropper till those get here.  I really did not like that big dose.

  • What is the benefit of them? Our pedi didn't mention them

  • We have chosen not to do them with any of our babies (all EBF). However, they have also spent at least 1+ hours per day outside pretty much from birth on in any weather. We had this discussion with our pedi and they (two different practices) were fine with that.

  • We spend a lot of time outside but he's pretty much always shielded from the sun so not sure if that counts.

  • My pediatrician recommended the vitamin. But he recommended one with vitamin a, b, c, d I think is what it has. He did say I could just do vitamin d but that this other was better. I like the idea of the one drop on the nipple though. Thanks for posting about this!

    Its a surprise! Team green!

  • Our ped recommended them as well, but we have been slacking and have yet to start.  Now that we've introduced the bottle, I didn't even think about just adding it in her milk there!  I may look into these one drop kinds also, that sounds nice!

  • I FF however DD pedi said we would talk about putting her on them at her next appt which is in 2 weeks.

  • Here they recommend it because we don't get a lot of sun during the winter, so it is recommended for all people - infant to senior.  Literally the sun rises at about 9ish and sets around 4:30 or 5 right now.  The shortest day of the year is about 5 1/2 hours of daylight - which may or may not be sun.

We do buy them and use them on occasion, but after we start formula feeding we generally let it slide a lot more.

  • We got a script today and tried them for the first time. I also felt like the dose was too much. I gave my LO the dose right before feeding time and then she didn't eat. It was almost as if the drops filled up her little tummy. I think tomorrow I'll do half the dose.
  • So far, our baby has never seen the sun.  It's winter, every time we've had him outside it's been cloudy and he's been wrapped within an inch of his life.  He's probably not getting actual sun on his actual skin for a couple months yet!

We use Tri-Vi-Sol.  He's mostly eating expressed breast milk, so we put it into one of his bottles each day.  My mother says she thinks she gave us Tri-Vi-Sol too!

I use Baby D drops. Its also just one drop on the nipple so I assume similar to the Carlson. So far its been no problem.
This is what our OB, and my prenatal instructor (who us an L&D nurse) recommended also!

  • We see the ped on Tuesday and she mentioned last time that we will talk about D drops at this appt. DD is definitely not getting much sunlight yet so I feel like I do need to give them. Thanks for the recommendations for the one drop types! Definitely going to ask my Dr about those if she opens with a dropper type first.
