December 2012 Moms

Harness..

So dd likes to walk everywhere on her own now, she refuses to hold my hand, little miss independent. I went and got her one of those back pack harnesses. I was telling a few friends and boy did they ridicule me. They were like you are one of those moms, I won't be seen in public with u if u put that on her. I was like she wants to walk on her own and this gives her a little freedom and me feeling safer about it. She can't get away to fast etc. this is the same childless friend that has everything to say about me raising my kid, that gas no clue what it's like. I swear I'm about yo go off on her, I shouldn't have yo explain everything I do to her! End rant! So what do u guys think of the harness??

  • I had one for DS. You gotta do what you gotta do.

  • I agree, you have to do what you have to do.  If it was my friend, I would probably be like "well I guess you won't be seen with us for awhile then!" lol :)  She'll probably cave anyways.
  • Everyone uses them here in the UK and thank goodness!  I have a 'proper' set of reins (as they are called here) that I can use to pick him up when he decides to crawl or examine some nasty old whatever he manages to find and the backpack kind for when he is a bit bigger (it gets caught up around his neck right now if/when he pulls on it).

I still feel worried about being judged for putting my baby on a 'leash', but better people judge me for that than he run out into traffic or something!

I side eye friends that don't have kids but have very strong opinions about how people should raise their children.  I don't see anything wrong with putting a harness on a toddler.  You're keeping your DD safe and still giving her the independence she wants - win win in my opinion.
This totally. You're the mom and know what will work best for your DD. I can definitely see the pros of a harness, so if you feel like that's a good solution for you, go for it...who cares what anyone else thinks?

  • I don't judge parents who use those backpack things.  I think they are particularly smart for walking in city/around own, when you are close to the street.  I ignore people's opinions when they have no basis.

  • We haven't had problems being out yet, but I can see it coming. Either way, definitely wouldn't judge.

  • As of yet I can't bring myself to buy one and use it, but I don't judge those that do. I think I've posted about this before but I did judge the person I saw that was using a retractable dog leash hooked on her sons belt loop. Using an actual dog leash just made me feel bad for the kid.

  • I think that those harnesses / backpacks are fabulous. The alternatives seem to be (1) hold hands everywhere, (2) watch LO like a hawk and therefore get nothing done bc you can't take your eyes off of them, and even then they can dart out quickly and get in some trouble, (3) have them in dangerous situations, or (4) use the harness / backpack. It seems like a no brainer to me.

OP, can I ask what harness you got? My little one isn't walking yet, so I haven't looked into them and would love to hear which you think is the best.
  • It's an Eddie baur one I got it at target, it is a pink bunny that looks like a backpack.

  • I'll admit I used to make fun of baby "leashes" but now... there are days when I would love one. At one point we just tied a balloon on a long string the back of DS's pants at a birthday party so we could keep track of him. Worked like a charm

  • I plan on getting one for Morgan this spring.  Right now she's content riding in the cart but it's getting close, she won't hold hands when she's walking anywhere else so for her safety and my peace of mind she will have and use one when we go anywhere when she's a little older.

  • I have always said I wouldn't use one, but now that DD is getting more independent, I'm getting the feeling like I may end up eating those words...but regardless, it's your kid...if you're comfortable using one, then tell your friends to mind their business...parenting is definitely not black and white and what's right for them may not be what's right for you and vice versa.
