FF moms weigh in

Are there any formula fed babies here who DO NOT STTN? I've read on Kelly Mom and La Leche League that formula fed babies are still wakeful at night, just like BF babies. My baby is EBF, but if all it takes is one bottle of formula at night to get him to keep his peepers closed I might try it.

Re: FF moms weigh in

  • My LO is BF/FF. Before bedtime, I nurse and if he's still hungry, I FF an ounce or two at a time until he's satisfied (no more than 3-4 oz.). He has been sleeping from 9-10pm to around 4-6am, but he still wakes up at 1am or so every 2-3 nights, at which time I nurse and he goes back down till morning. His MOTN wake-ups don't seem to have anything to do with what he ate before bed.

  • LO is FF for about a month now and STTN is still hit and miss despite bedtime routine.  We have been up three times this week in the MOTN to eat.  He weighs over 14 pounds, IDK.  Sometimes sleeps 9pm to 5-6am. 12 weeks so maybe growing or something, I just go with the flow these days.
  • Nope. She sleeps from 8 or 9 until 2, 3 or once 6. She's still getting up at least once a night. My dh says I should just feed her more so she'll sleep longer. Really? Just force it? He kills me with his advice.

DS is now all formula (was EP prior) and he still gets up at 2 or 3am and then again at 5 or 6 am. Goes to bed at 9. I don't think sleep has that much to do with food in my opinion. I think it is more individual to each baby.

I hear you. But my baby is up every 2 hours like clockwork ready to chow down. If formula takes longer to digest I could be down with it. We're up about 6 times a night. It's rough.

  • Brayden has never once slept through the night. Well I did get a 7 hour stretch ONCE and he's 4 months! He sleeps from about 7:30 pm-7am & gets up about 3 times to eat. And he's never consistent about how much he eats when he wakes up. Anywhere from 2-5 oz usually. I've started trying the pacifier first & my hand on his chest and sometimes he'll go back to sleep for a while.
  • Nope, my baby missed the STTN memo. Actually both of my children did.

    MOST NIGHTS

DD takes her last 4oz around 10, eats at 3, again at 6, & up for the day by 9.

Other nights she will take her 10pm bottle wake around 2 and usually not go back to sleep till 5. Anytime she wakes up before 3 I get real nervous.

Having said all this if I can get 5 straight hours out of her I thank my lucky stars. DS never slept more than two hours at a time.

  • DS1 was FF and still does not STTN.
DS2 is FF and only STTN if he is in his swing.

  • Lo is FF and typically wakes twice a night between 8 pm and 7 am to eat two 5 oz bottles. Awesome, right?
  • We have been FF since day 1and LO has only STTN 3 nights. And by STTN I mean 9 pm- 5 am.
  • I FF and LO wakes up once at night to be fed, usually between 3-4am. we give her an ounce or two right before putting her down to fill her up if it has been over an hour since her previous feeding. Once in a while we will get a 6 hr stretch.
  • DS is FF and does get 5/6 hours of sleep but we have some nights when he up every 2 hours so it's hit or miss with us

My LO has a 6 oz bottle of formula at 9 asleep by 10/10:15 and sleeps until 9:30/10. I'm up every 30 minutes checking to make sure she is ok. So even though my baby STTN this mana does not.

  • If u count STTN as 5 hours we did that since about 7-8 weeks. 8 hours plus started about a month ago around 12 weeks.

  • LO is currently 12 weeks. The first time he STTN was the night he got his 2 month shots, so roughly 3-4 weeks ago. After that 1 night, he would sleep in spurts of 5-6 hours, getting up to eat and sleeping another 2. We seem to be having more consistent sleeps of 8 hours over the past week with no noticeable increase in feeding.

  • Emery goes down around 7-8 and gets up around 3 to eat, then back to sleep til 5:30ish. I don't mind getting up but it'd be great if he'd sleep til 7!

This is my daughter as well.

On the nights she is up around 3am she sleeps 6-7 hours before waking up (bed time is between 8 and 9pm) Then she usually wakes up around 6am for another bottle.

I combo feed but ebf for 6weeks, formula will not make baby magically sttn. However, it does give dh the ability to help out and give you a little break. If you have a good supply (I do not) then have dh offer pumped bm bottle while you rest.

My supply is good. My freezer stash usually runs about 20 ounces because he eats every 2 hours around the clock. Pumping is hard for me to do. Plus I'm back at work, and Saturdays are my "me" days where LO kicks it with daddy for a while and I get out. We used to do PM bottles of BM, but then I decided I'd rather get out on the weekend ;)

This is us. We get some nights where he STTN here recently but mostly he will only wake 1 time.
  • Ds has been ff since 8 weeks and within the last 2 weeks has stated STTN. Goes to bed at 8:30. Up anywhere between 2:30-4am to eat, goes back to sleep and then wakes up between 6-7am and is up for the day. He always gets the same amount (5oz) for his MOTN feeding and usually finishes it all.

This is us pretty much. Just went to all formula last Monday and he has anywhere from 5-7 hour sprints. If he goes down before 10 he's up anytime from 3-5 and then goes back down after eating for another hour to two hours. If he gets up after 6 its only 30 minutes and he's up for the day.
  • DS is 3.5 mos and FF and definitely is not even close to STTN. He goes to sleep around 9pm, wakes at 2 or 3 to eat, wakes again around 6ish to eat, then up for the day around 7:30 or 8. He also stirs in between feedings so I'm getting very little sleep.

DD was BF and FF and STTN from 6 weeks on. I'm wishing DS had gotten those sleep habits.

  • My LO has been FF since 10 weeks old.  He's almost 4 months now and for the past month he will sleep for 6-7 hours a night, BUT he will not fall asleep before midnight.  I guess that's technically STTN.  I like the longer stretches, but I'm not loving partying with a baby until midnight every night.  Honestly, I don't know if formula makes a difference in their sleeping patterns though.
