Question re: coconut oil...may already have been answered

Not sure if there is an answer for this already. If there is I couldn't find it. I hear amazing things about coconut oil as a moisturizer and a personal lubricant. I want to try it out but I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Do I buy the cooking coconut oil they sell at trader joes and and slather it on my body and girly parts? Or is there cvs brand that is intended for that use? Not sure at all. Sorry if it's a stupid question I just don't want to give myself a yeast infection or anything by using the wrong product. Lol. Thanks in advance!

  • I've read on various blogs (not pregnancy related ones tho) that people have used the Traders Joe one. Also read if you whip it with a mixer to add mix air into it. It will last and keep a softer texture for applying to skin. You can also add few drops of an essential oil to scent it. Sorry I'm not sure about the girly parts bit but am curious too.

  • If you have a Sams Club or something similar by you they sell it in bulk for farely cheap. My sister uses it for my niece and nephews skin, for cooking, for EVERYTHING. Also, its not like regular oil, if it gets above a certain temperature it turns to a solidish, so don't freak out if its more like a lotion than regular oils. Lol.
  • I would think you wouldn't want it on your girly parts. It isn't recommended to use regular lotions or oils there because of pH balance so my general take is the less product there the better.
  • I use it to remove makeup. I bought some on amazon (the kind that hardens at cooler temps) and a liquid bottle at Walgreens (only because I was there picking up a prescription) . It really is good for multiple uses. I'm on pelvic rest so no advice on lube BUT I know I saw a lot of girls on TTGP used it.
  • Costco sells a huge tub of Nutiva for about $25. While I love using coconut oil on my body, I can't stand the rancid smell it gets as the day goes on. Any ideas how to avoid this? Separating into two separate containers - one for body, one for kitchen, like @joules235 mentioned is a must!

  • i bought a jar at whole foods. I use it for cooking and once a while on skin etc. It's just a little greasy so I use it once in a while vs all the time.

I'm not sure I'd ever use it as a lubricant...it just seems weird to me.

  • Any coconut oil should be fine as long as it is JUST coconut oil. Shocker of shockers, Walmart sells organic coconut oil on the CHEAP if organic is your thing.

  • I'm curious about the smell? MIL uses it on her hair, which is traditional in India. She uses a specific product intended for the hair. DH and I find the smell absolutely horrible. I always assumed that was "coconut oil smell" but now I'm wondering if it's just that product. Does anyone else consider the smell strong?

  • I get Organic Virgin Coconut Oil at Costco really cheap. I also keep some in a separate jar in the bathroom so as not to contaminate the stash I keep for cooking.
  • You guys crack me up!!!! I'm so glad I'm getting answers. I don't personally know anyone who uses it but I want slather it all over !! Lol. My hormones are making me a crusty dry reptile.
  • I use the TJ's brand but only because it's the most convenient, I'd buy any organic brand, probably. And yep, add me to the CO lube club. If you look at the chemicals in a bottle of KY (warming is what I had and looked at) I don't know how CO could be any less safe! ;)

And, yes, I keep my cooking, beauty and lube CO containers all separate!

  • I use it for everything except for lube, but I don't use any lubricant at all so...

I buy the big jar of organic solid from Native for around $25.

  • We got a large jar for $5 from a farmer's market. It's all natural, simply coconut oil. The jar says baking but it's good for everything. It works way better than ky jelly!
  • I use it as lotion - it is a bit greasy, but it soaks in fairly quickly. I find it works wayy better than other lotions. Plus, I feel safe about using in on DS.
I will admit, I don't use it for cooking really.

I use it a lot when baking, as a substitute for butter or other oils. But I really don't cook with it a lot either, I guess. The more I thought about it, it's definitely more baking for me. And Thai kind of dishes that already have a hint of sweetness.

  • I have purchased the kind from Trader Joe's - used it on DD's diaper area since it is CD safe and helps on so many levels (we had yeastie fun for a while).

  • I have been wanting to use this for a while now. After reading these post I must go buy some.

Forgot about the diaper rash part! It has helped wayyy faster than any other cream when his little bum gets red. Thankfully we have only ever had 1 real rash, but anytime we think he is redder than usual, we put some CO on and he is good to go.
  • I use organic coconut oil for everything... everything. ;)
  • Thanks so much for all the responses everyone. I feel much better about giving it a try and you guys really give me a good chuckle. I had no idea that you could use it on baby booty too. That's great. I also read somewhere that it was good to take in a table spoon a day for other health benefits. Anyone ever try that?
  • My stretch mark cream's main ingredient is coconut oil and it's really a great moisturizer.  Wherever on my body that I apply it stays soft all day.
