Curious about hiccups after birth

I'm 34 weeks along and my daughter gets the hiccups at least once a day. I hear all about babies getting them when they're in the womb, but nobody has ever talked about their newborn getting them. So, for all the mothers on here, do newborns get the hiccups as much as before they were born? I just thought of this earlier and I'm very curious. :)

Re: Curious about hiccups after birth

  • Yep. Well, sometimes, I should say. DD had hiccups at least once a day until she was about 2 months old. Apparently, it doesn't actually bother them like it does adults. It's nothing to worry about...just something cute to take a video of.

  • Newborns get them frequently.

  • Yup, my DD had hiccups several times a day when I was pregnant with her, and continued to get them several times a day when she was a newborn. Newborn hiccups are freaking adorable.

  • How do they go away?
  • Yes, daily. If it's bothering him or keeping him from eating or sleeping, gripe water works about 75% of the time for us. If he's just chillin and hiccuping then I just let them run their course. It's never more than a few minutes.

  • My two had hiccups several times a day. I found that nursing them helped to get rid of them. It's all about lessening the movement of the diaphragm. If they're eating, they're not breathing as much. It's the same for adults. If you have the hiccups, take shallower breaths, holding your breath a bit longer than usual in between.

  • Yup. Gets them about once a day, just like in the womb. Doesn't seem to bother him.
  • Mine gets them about 4 times a day now, I'm curious to see how often he'll get them after he's born!

  • I don't remember ever feeling my son hiccuping in the womb but when he was a newborn he had them a lot. At least once a day for a while. I even asked my pedi about it and he said it was completely normal. Eventually he just outgrew them.
