Ok - so as a first time mom my head is spinning from all the choices... Do I go with an eco-friendly brand or not... Any advice would be greatly appreciated on what things I absolutely need!
I'm a first time mom too, what I did is I got some pampers, huggies and Eco friendly ones for when the baby is born and then I will see which ones work best because every baby is different and some diapers are better for some babies and others aren't.

What else have you bought as a must have before the baby?
Take a breath and relax. I would buy a small box or bag of each if you are that worried. The thing is you do not know which one will work best until your little one is here. Hopefully you get some at a shower, but pampers and huggies are good. I use generic brands and it is great too. Remember it is not a serious thing as they are shit rags lol
I have pretty much everything. I've bought diapers, wipes (pampers kind and Eco friendly ) I have 3 different type of cream, just small bottles and same with baby wash/shampoo. Wash cloths, towels, snot sucker, baby grooming kit.
We didn't have a baby shower as we don't know what we are having and we didnt want to get just yellow and white stuff, so we are doing something after the baby is born, so we bought all the little onesies and sleepers we need for the first little bit.

We had a baby shower and also don't know what we are having. We just did not register for clothes. So I have a lot of the big items, but the small stuff is where I'm stuck. Thanks for you advice!
With my first i settled on target brand and was very happy with them. I plan to use them this time around too unless the baby reacts to them some how. I also use target wipes (unscented) and am happy with them.
For disposables I really liked the kirkland brand from costco, they were a good quality/price. We ended up switching to cloth diapers. We use Gdiapers and I am glad to already have all the diapers I will need for the new baby. Advice don't buy too many diapers of one size, before you know it, they are in the next size.
We were blessed to get a bunch of diapers and over 2000 wipes in our shower... We really like pampers swaddlers. We got huggies, but they seem to leak. I just packed them away and will save them if we need them.. Or offer them to a friend. As far as cream, the hospital gave us a&d ointment, and I love it. Haven't had a rash. (But I change him as soon as I see he's wet, I'm sure that has something to do with it). Also, I only registered for pampers sensitive wipes and that's all we got. I really like them. As far as essentials go... We literally use nothing fancy that we got for baby. He's 4 weeks old. We use on a daily basis: between 6 and 12 diapers. Wipes each time. Go through about 4 receiving blankets (I put them on the changing table.. And use them while breast feeding. He pees while changing, and the breast feeding can get very very wet). We have 2 fleece blankets that we use a lot. I throw a wash cloth over his privates when we change. Sometimes we use 2 a day. He lives in footy pj's. sometimes we use 2 a day. Sometimes just one. Now that he's bigger, i use the belly mat we got. We like tummy time. We have used his bathtub twice. The hospital gave us a full size baby phisoderm for baths.. I like it because it's light and gentle. We use the pack and play. But not the bassinet. He sleeps with me at night, so the pack and play is used throughout the day. He naps in it for like 10 minutes at a time. I pretty much use it as a changing table. He never wears any of the "cute" outfits we got. Outgrew most of them already. We got a baby medicine kit thing and out of that I haven't had to use the snot sucker, but I do use the thermometer every now and then. And I've used the gas drops once, but I think that was more me not knowing him yet. He gets fussy when he's passing gas, but it seems normal now. He also only wears socks when his jammies don't have feet. That's about it. Oh, I use my pump only when I'm engorged and he's asleep between feelings. Maybe twice a week. But I highly recommend a pump.
Edited to correct amount of wipes.
Sorry this reply is a little late, but wanted to mention a good website called goodguide.com you can use to research products. It rates products on a 1-10 scale in categories like health effects, environmental impact, company ethics etc...So you can see how harmful a product is and what kind of chemicals it contains. Also, if you are trying to be Eco friendly, you can see those products which support that. I have used it to get an idea of the top few choices I think are most healthful so I can try those when baby comes, and hopefully he likes them.
